Guest niterida Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 I have a chance to buy a 2nd hand Rotel RB-985 5x100wrms amp for $400 But I can get 2 x Fenton Pro 2 x 125wrms amps brand new for $180 - https://www.tronios.com/sound/amplifiers/fpl700-digital-amplifier-blue-led-eq/ I only need 4 channels Is it worth saving $220 or will the Rotel be a better bet ? Also if I buy the Rotel would I be better using it for the front 5 channels and my AVR (RX-V3079) for the 2 rear surrounds or the AVR for LCR ( 3 x 125wrms I think) and the Rotel for the 4 surrounds ?
jdh500 Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 (edited) I’d buy the used Rotel as you basically know what your getting that has been successfully used for music and HT purposes. The other amp you have the link to does not have any real detail on distortion levels, also looks that it uses a couple of noisy fans to achieve the high power rating claimed. The Rotel uses a linear power supply, no fans and is a traditional class AB amp rather than class D. I’d probably use the Rotel for LCR and also the 2 Surrounds and use the AV receiver for ATMOS ceiling speakers and maybe an external zone 2 area if used. JDH Edited December 29, 2019 by jdh500 1
betty boop Posted December 29, 2019 Posted December 29, 2019 agree with JDH above, with rotel you are able to pick up a known quantity in what is good honest engineering buying at a pretty affordable price. certainly most airs cant fit in kind of amplification you will likely get in an external amp of the rotel 1
