cafe67 Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 Saw this today , unusual movie very funny in parts , but it is darker than the trailers would have you believe. very poignant in parts ( into rally scenes and girl in the attic) but there is some out there humour pretty is the young lads film , with support from SJH, Rockwell is typically Wierd. Hitler as imaginary friend is well done ,but perhaps could have been used more . Different but fun and enjoyable
audiofeline Posted December 27, 2019 Posted December 27, 2019 The review in The Age said it was a dark film, and recommended that children are not taken to see it. It also suggested it was very good. https://www.theage.com.au/culture/movies/hitler-comedy-as-a-concept-it-s-a-risky-move-but-it-works-here-20191223-p53mg8.html

But if you like that sorts of movie, it's very good. It doesn't bash you over the head with it message.

Ian McP Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 (edited) Has Taika Waititi's sense of humour written all over it. He deftly changes gears from high farce to serious drama and back again. No spoilers, closing scene had me choking back the tears. * * * * 1/2 highly recommended! Edited January 6, 2020 by Ian McP spelling 3
Ian McP Posted January 6, 2020 Posted January 6, 2020 Been a big fan of Taika Waititi since Boy, his following films fantastic, What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt For The Wilderpeople. Haven't seen Thor: Ragnarok but apparently he's snuck in some of his trademark humour even into the Marvel genre https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boy_(2010_film) here's early short of his 3
IAMGORT Posted February 15, 2020 Posted February 15, 2020 Watched this last night, love it. So different/dark/funny/sad and uplifting all at the same time.. Highly recommended, great to see he won for screenplay Oscar.
darth vader Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 I didn't like this one at all. Just not my cup of tea I guess

darth vader Posted February 24, 2020 Posted February 24, 2020 It is what it is I guess @betty boop. I don't want to take away from it for those that liked it. The consensus is that its not a kids movie. I wouldn't keep my kids from watching it as they are old enough to slightly grasp the concepts but they wouldn't enjoy it. That said it becomes an adult movie about kids. 1

Some of the imagery runs from innocent to dark to poignant. The acting by the young fella is brilliant. I enjoyed i think parts could have been done better but i think ill getit on bd when it comes out. 1

I tend to just go along for the ride with this stuff so not trying to go in with any preconceptions. to be honest I stay well away from any reviews and such before watching any movie too for same very reason i'll be getting it on disc for sure its even on uhd though not sure if it gains much in the format over regular blu-ray 1
betty boop Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 was out on disc today locally... I picked up my copy on uhd...though not sure when will get a chance to watch it ... going into a busy patch with the hoopla of current !
hopefullguy Posted March 21, 2020 Posted March 21, 2020 the sets were great, Hitler guy was not funny but the small part played by the fat kid were the best by far. take him out and it was a bit boring. 1

I actually expected to see more of his friend, wasn't until I read your comment that I thought "yeah, not as much as what I thought". With that was potential to highlight the difference between right/wrong, good/evil. I mean, is there stronger imagery to denote evil? 1
betty boop Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 gosh ! I finally got around to seeing this. since I picked it up on 4k uhd blu-ray earlier... I cannot believe this film. I have to declare front up I have family on both sides pretty heavily impacted by ww2 so initially can tell you, I was even sitting there watching with the satire thinking something about this is just not right. perhaps I shouldn't even be watching this. I am not sure why I felt that ways but I did... probably only first 10min. ...and then it crept up on me and got it.... I love the satire of it. I dont think have seen a movie of this sort handle the subject matter in such a way before and in this manner. The imaginary friend I was fine with and in the limited manner used. He might have intruded I'd say if used more.... The characters though .... jojo ... amazing acting for the kid. ... scarlett johanssen wow ! what a role and her manner in the film. So well done, I think i related to her as she reminded me so much of a close relative of mine and how close she is in character. The girl... played by Thomassin ...she reminded me so much of 99% of a friend i know, her acting and manner too just superb. And Rebel Wilson... ha ! what a hoot ! Quirky, interesting, funny and yet so touching.... watching this all I could think off is there are such geniuses in the movie business to pull off something like this. Amazing people. Can I give this movie a 9/10 ? why not ! its amazingly well shot too Id give Picture quality 8/10 and sound is very good too, loved the musical interludes and song choices.... and they come across with such splendour... Sound quality 8/10 as well. I took some screen shots to capture some of the great characters and moments... and yeah ... loved the ending .... 5
Mobe1969 Posted April 13, 2020 Posted April 13, 2020 Oddly enough, I didn't realize Hitler had blue eyes before this. I always though it made it more clear how nuts his position on blonde hair blue eyes when he was the opposite... So I was surprised to check afterwards he did have blue. I was wondering why Taika Waititi was wearing blue contacts in the film. 1

hometheatrebugbitten Posted June 23, 2020 Posted June 23, 2020 watched it on the weekend - loved it and thought it was superbly done. Better than I expected (was a tad unsure) I was suprised how much the imaginary friend was in it - given what I read above I guess I was expecting less 1
