Item: Lewis Muratori large 3 way
Price Range: Market Price
Item Condition: Used
Extra Info:

I'm after an efficient, full range, 3 way speaker to use with a SET amp and I thought I'd see what's out there.

I know Lewis passed away a few years ago (very sad) but I think he built a number of pairs of these speakers.

Lewis was a very inventive designer/builder of speakers.

The speakers that I'm after are a large 3 way with a 15 inch Audax bass driver, a Focal 6 inch midrange and a Scanspeak tweeter.

Although one or two pairs may have had a ribbon tweeter.

PM me if you have a pair that you want to sell.

Cheers

You never know - you might get lucky in your search for a pair of those massive speakers.

They were easy to drive and pretty awesome.  You just need to tame that midrange a touch...

Lois has been gone almost 10 years now.  Jeez - where has the time gone!

My brother still has the Julia bookshelves

fantastic speakers.

I tried the Giulia (named in memory of an Alfa Romeo car model), Lewis lent me a pair many years ago and they sounded great.

Hi Red

Is the midrange fairly prominent?

I have only heard them for a short period of time in not ideal conditions but I like what I heard.

Yes, but that is the only negative of this speaker.  Greg Osborn used the same rubbish mid early on.

However, Focal made another mid exactly the same basket size (but not that stupid yellow kevlar cone material) and it literally just drops in and works perfect with that crossover.  ?

I'm still looking for a pair of speakers which are efficient and an easy load. to run with my single ended valve amp.

Any suggestions?

Hi Herby

unfortunately I dont have a pair now to sell, but did own a 3 way pair exactly as you describe (with Raven ribbon tweeter) for more than 10 years. I loved what they did and honestly had the most enjoyable listening sessions ever over this time in the whole (pushing 30 yrs now) time I have owned "better end" audio speaker systems. They were a joy. The kevlar mids did not bother me to the point of seeing a need to change them, although no doubt, they could be improved-like most other components on most other speakers etc. I did drive them successfully with 27W 13E1 SE amp, as well as other slightly more powerful PP tube amps and preamp. I would certainly not discourage a potential buyer like yourself picking up a pair if they could do so.

However, my pair were sold to a guy in Melb. about 4 years ago, who knew Lewis(I believe) and to my knowledge still has them.

Hi Aertex

I contacted the guy in Melbourne that you sold your speakers to, you gave me his email or phone number, he was a personal friend of Lewis's and wants to hang onto them.

Any other suggestions for an efficient 3 way system that is an easy load for a SET?

I've run into a bit of a dead end with trying to find speakers that Lewis Muratori built.

I think I might speak to Pat O'Brien and see what he makes for use with a single ended amplifier.

I still want a floor standing speaker, 3 way, efficient, good bass maybe using the Raven ribbon tweeter.
