SAM2811 Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 Hi Everyone, I have bought an amplifier and it came damage on one of the corner. When I asked the seller the damage was not done by him but it was on the transit and I paid lot for the postage and it got an insurance too. Can anyone help me to find someone who can give me a quote on the job locally around Melbourne. I am happy to bring the amplifier to you to check it out. It is just cosmetic for sure.
hopefullguy Posted December 16, 2019 Posted December 16, 2019 (edited) maybe post what make/model it is. plastic/metal box? poorly packed so sellers fault but not much you can do about that. if you buy other gear require seller to forward pictures of packing prior to shipping. SAM2811 Posted December 16, 2019 Author Posted December 16, 2019 (edited) It is not seller's fault as it was given to pack and send and they might have bumped a bit. I will keep that in mind. Seems like aluminium front. It is music fedility amp Edited December 16, 2019 by SAM2811
SAM2811 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 Do you think a panel beater will do the job ?? I thought to approach some people who refurbish speakers can do this job
frankn Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 If the finish is metal then unlikely a speaker service agent will be able to help as they are mostly woodworking/cabinetry. can you push/smooth the damaged section reasonably flat again? Then use something like JB Weld to fill in the bumps? Otherwise if the damaged section is in a “base” corner perhaps put an ornament in front of it and forget about a cosmetic repair. Also try contacting MF (or the distributor) and ask if a replacement panel is available??
SAM2811 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 You got a valid point. I am not that handy when comes to a handy man work. Also it has been insured and it is all pack and send's fault. Just want a quote to fix so that I can claim it out of the insurance that I paid on top
VanArn Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 (edited) Is it only the top case that has sustained impact damage and does the packing that the amplifier was transported with actually show that it has been dropped or otherwise mistreated ? You will need to lodge a claim immediately and provide as much material as possible to receive full compensation. As frankn has suggested ask MF or their distributor for the cost of a replacement, as this should be the basis for a proper repair. Edited December 17, 2019 by VanArn addition
SAM2811 Posted December 17, 2019 Author Posted December 17, 2019 I have provided all the evidence on the day of the delivery to pack and send for insurance claim but the only issue I couldn't get a quote and I have tried with the amp manufacturers and they didn't get back to me as well.
BLAH BLAH Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 Just picked up my box back up from Pack and Send this afternoon...double boxed it myself because it had a nice minty amp in theres and did not want it marked at all! Cost me an arm and a leg...but arrived as sent!

Yep, if packed correctly then this sort of damage shouldn't happen.
betty boop Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 very hard to tell with just a small section shown. ?? have owned some MF amps over the years. likely just cosmetic but hard ot say not knowing model or where damage is given the photo posted. I doubt anyone will be able to fix. cosmetically... just not kind of thing folks do. its not like a car to panel beat ! its unfortunate its damaged but what folks live with. might be able to claim value of 2nd hand amp via insurance. to fix, at best might get a new facia but am not sure mf has or replaces those routinely. cant imagine they do. not kind of thing expect makers to do. generally they would keep or replacing failing parts as do with general use over years and which any electronics repairer could do same. ps one of reasons i will never buy anything unless shipped in original packaging....not to say still cant be damaged in that, but tend to stand a better chance... 1
audiofeline Posted December 19, 2019 Posted December 19, 2019 Because the damage is on brushed aluminum I would think that it can't be repaired to original condition - it would need to be replaced. I have repaired a dinged aluminum corner by hammering as much of it back into shape as possible, then using Selleys Knead It Multipurpose hand kneadable fast setting epoxy putty (about $15 from Bunnings) to fill the missing part. (I drilled a couple of tiny holes in the edge of the plate so there would be more for the putty to grip on). Then file the excess aluminum and putty (when set). If done carefully it will restore the original shape perfectly. Spray painting will cover the repair work and it will look undamaged - traditional electronics satin black is good, but I used a hammertone finish to give a vintage appearance.

Can you please post another photo showing a better perspective of the amp so i can see the actual position on the amp were the damage is, if the panel can be removed, a new one can be fabricated and surface finished to match the original panel, then anodized black. I doubt any hifi shop can help you.
