Tasebass Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 I'd always had some "trouble" mounting my XV1s to the Univector tonearm due to the headshell not being fixed and the mounting of the headshell to the arm wand is via a knurled grub screw which i replaced with a small screw but was never happy with the outcome. So after some thought and knowledge of certain adhesives and substrates I decided to permanently bond the headshell to the arm wand. I had already sent this arm along with a LInn Keel down to Duc (R.I.P) to have it modified for LInn mount so the geometry was no problem as I used a linn Ittok printout for reference and measurements....
Tasebass Posted December 14, 2019 Author Posted December 14, 2019 Results are a much easier mounting process. XV1s is singing more sweetly than before and tracking better due to a more accurate and less fiddly process... Tase.
metal beat Posted December 14, 2019 Posted December 14, 2019 Nice Tase, but doesn't that remove the ability to quickly swap cartridges with different head shells?

Yes..... but it ain't a quick swap IMO as you have to still go through an alignment process....not like the SME type mounts which are bayonet screw in/out... As mentioned this arm is linn mount ONLY so no need for Stevenson/Loefgren geometry which the headshell mount that Duc offered with the arm has... Tase. 1

That is beautiful, Tase - I'm curious to know how you made sure you organised the correct offset angle, whilst the adhesive was drying? Andy

Andy As mentioned earlier Andy I used a LInn Ittok mounting template as reference ...this particular Univector has the same effective length and angles so it was just a matter of careful measurement...( I placed the Univector's wand on top of the Ittok template and basically did a "copy and paste"... Still a .fiddly job though..). I used Two different adhesives because as you mentioned I needed to make sure the headshell alignment to be spot on. The first adhesive is a slow curing affair which I used through the hole where the screw mounts. This gave me enough time to make sure all was correct. The second adhesive..( basically a super glue with a powder for filling ) i applied around the headshell and the metal piece at the end of the Univector's wand. I ..( very carefully ) applied the powder/glue and let capillary action do its thing... another fiddly job.... Once all was dry...I left the wand alone for over a week...i performed the final cosmetics...all done.........( to remove the headshell now would require a grinder of some sort...) I should mention that I had Kimil Electrons shorten the arm lead down by half. I'm a big believer in short as possible signal/cable paths, this now allows me to place the Naim phono stage much closer the the TT. Have noticed that all these mods have lowered the noise floor considerably. The XV1s/Univector/Superline are now nearly as quiet as my Linn Kandid/Ekos SE/Urika affair...( Ihad always had this slightly annoying hum but for what ever reasons 90% of it has gone..) 2

mloutfie Posted December 15, 2019 Posted December 15, 2019 Pretty sure there is a SNA'er that actually designed and made a CNC headshell for his duc's univector. I've seen it playing in his place once when we had a chat about CNCing a plinth. He lives in Berwick His name is Kev but I can't seem to remember his id. 2

I had intentions of sending my Univector down to Duc for a headshell mod as he had one made up which He did show on the forum once..... Tase.
