Peterbean Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I had one of those houses too. I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t find the studs, until a carpenter tried too and worked it out
Peterbean Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 IKEA has brought out a leg unit for kallax, I can’t get it to paste at the moment, but worth looking at- stable and strong but not especially funky

Wonder if others have used the frame with legs? 3

feralfibre Posted December 29, 2023 Posted December 29, 2023 So much good information in this thread! I really need to stop procrastinating and get my vinyl stored properly. It would fit nicely into a 4x2 Kallax, with about a cube and a half spare. It’s in cartons on the floor at the moment. It’s interesting that the Kallax frame with feet has been mentioned - but does anyone have a smallish unit on the castors that IKEA used to sell? Putting the cart before the horse I’ve obtained a set of 3 of these (6 wheels joined in pairs with a metal strip) but don’t actually own a Kallax as yet. Would I have a weight distribution problem with them on a 4x2? I thought it would be useful to have a mobile unit - unless 6-7 full cubes turn it into an immoveable and/or unstable object. I would be adding backing to stabilise the unit.
stevoz Posted June 13, 2024 Posted June 13, 2024 I'm sure there is a general vinyl storage thread but I found this one first. Ok, it's not Kallax but the Bunnings equivalent (and just as good). It was either Richmond (Ikea) or just up the road to Bendigo, so Bunnings won (and it was a bit cheaper than Kallax too). Finally my vinyl is responsibly stored in alphabetical order. More cleaning up of the area needed but looking better. From this: To this: Oh and for a laugh, thought I'd throw this one in.....from the spare room after initially thinking, I might sell some LP's so I should keep the mailers. Stupid idea indeed and I'll admit, a touch embarrassing.....and yes, I'm addicted to buying records. Slowly getting rid of them now via the fortnightly recycle bin collection! 7 2 2
frankn Posted January 3 Posted January 3 I just purchased the 2 drawer Kallex insert thinking I would be able to simply place my CDs in the drawers vertically so I could easily read the titles. Free up some counter space. Well ……..sort of. The drawer depth is just a couple of mm too shallow to allow the CDs to stand vertical, and have the drawer shut. I have to angle them in. So probably lose 10 CDs storage / drawer. It doesn’t make any difference if you do/don’t use an insert in the drawer. Bad design by IKEA Audio (given that Kallex box shelves are probably the #1 storage system for audio).

Well, you could always claim that they came with an interesting array of stamps, especially European! 1

I think I would be most vexed (or just pissed off), if I got it all home from IKEA, loaded up the CDs, then discovered that design limitation... Thanks for the warning! Do the cardboard CD sleeves (Digipacks, I think they're called) also stick up a little too far as well?

I have some CDs that were purchased and come in the cardboard sleeves, these fit fine , it’s the CDs in jewel cases and the like.
frankn Posted January 9 Posted January 9 @Battyyes you can put them on their side however they lose sideways structural integrity- prone to collapse if too much weight (commonly LPs) in the boxes. If you ask the question for the basis of inserting drawers it makes no difference as the cubes are symmetrical. 1
April Snow Posted January 9 Author Posted January 9 I would not do it @Batty the longer shelves are the weight bearing ones - the shorter ones are the dividers. I also had backs put on mine for bracing - and then everything was also glued and screwed. 1
