awayward Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 Looks like Roon has had a makeover with some nice improvements. https://community.roonlabs.com/t/roon-1-7-is-live/84126 1
Guest scumbag Posted November 21, 2019 Posted November 21, 2019 I had issues updating my Roon Rock. Just make sure you do a complete reboot and it will work after that. I see Roon also put the price of lifetime up $200 US just prior to releasing 1.7

As for the lifetime price hike, they have publicly stated they are not fans and have internal meetings regarding whether they should abandon this or not. I know one of their chief officers publicly said today that had they announced the price hike, November would have been their most successful month ever, but they are not that kind of company. I currently have lifetime but if I didnt, with the price hike, I think I would be fine with annual (which hasn't changed price).

It really doesn't give them an income stream. I happen to have lifetime so it doesn't affect me. I can see why people who were considering it might be a bit peeved. I think it will get dumped sooner rather than later. Edited November 21, 2019 by scumbag

A second opinion after a few hours of music, at the end of some albums I know well I have said to myself that I have never heard it better, perhaps a SQ improvement, the flow seems better if you know what I mean. Demondes Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 I quite like the Internet radio feature, you can build up a playlist of fave stations. Havent listened to enough Qobuz or my local lossless collection to determine any SQ improvements. The big feature they are spruiking is the Valence, which should provide faster search and AI recommendations, plus additional information on the music. I also like the lyrics scrolling feature on the ipad (although was released with 1.6) Now I can probably sell my magnum dynalab.

I’m not sure Roon would consider they have the ability to change SQ by tweaks to software. They aim for bit perfect delivery that will only alter if you enable DSP. So for me, no. 1

Streaming Optimizations For music playing from TIDAL and Qobuz, Roon now buffers data in a less disruptive way, and there are optimizations which reduce disk activity, CPU usage, and memory traffic. This means that streaming content starts faster and slower internet connections (or lower-powered cores) may also benefit when streaming high-resolution content
Guest scumbag Posted November 22, 2019 Posted November 22, 2019 Guys, there is only one road that this line of discussion can take. Unless you're keen to see another closed thread on this forum. If so, knock yourselves out.
jt301 Posted November 23, 2019 Posted November 23, 2019 Coming from a Naim unityserve to Roon, my only disappointment was the lack of the internet radio facilities. Version 1.7 upgrade went a long way to addressing that. I spent a lot of time yesterday exploring the different stations on offer.
todagt Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 I was about to pull the trigger on the lifetime membership, seems way too risky now that I will be over a 5.5 year break even point.

If you happened to be in the 1st 30 days of an annual subscription, or on a free trial, they will still allow the old lifetime price. That's a pretty specific allowance though

I wasn't expecting any, but there does seem to be a pristine openness to the sound that wasn't there before. Roon was already my go-to player - I already preferred SQ to either Audirvana or HQplayer (and I'd previously been a fan of A+ and HQP). Usability and GUI are miles ahead of those other apps of course. 2

I bought my lifetime subscription 2yrs ago after using Roon for a year on annual subscription - it was arguably more risky back then because it was less established. Today there is a bigger user base and expanded hardware manufacturer affiliations. In any case, Roon has stated the lifetime subscription will be most likely be scraped altogether in favour of a subscription only model. The lifetime option has apparently served its purpose of establishing the business and now they need an ongoing revenue stream.
davewantsmoore Posted November 24, 2019 Posted November 24, 2019 Still no way to hide the radio panel (?!!!?) "Roon radio will take over when your queue is finished" ..... Hmm... Yes, I know, thanks.... Now stop taking up so much screen realestate and clunking up the UI.
blybo Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 Seems much faster to open/refresh on my iphone X and generally just snappier. Very happy.

Even to the point where I can turn up 1-2 dB without feeling of being "too loud". Not sure what they did.
Mike13 Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 Has the price increase taken effect already?
