I have a Sonab 67s that I’ve had from new. It works perfectly, I think I’m only on my third or maybe fourth drive belt in all that time (about 40 years!). The issue I have is that all the oil from the hydraulic arm lifter has disappeared although I can still lower the arm. However this relies on my ‘hydraulic’ finger. So, help required as to how to replace the oil....

Welcome to SNA Markie.

I've had a look on VinylEngine and there is no documentation for download on this turntable (if you have the manual it would be good if you could scan and upload it there).

Original arm lifter oil often hardens with age rather than leaking out (although that can happen for some designs).  The hydraulic cylinder is usually dismantled, the old oil cleaned out, and replaced with silicone oil (available on the internet).  A google search can find posts of people describing how they have done that.

How this is done depends on the design.  Posting some photos could help people give suggestions here.

Welcome Markie,

being an old Sonab tragic myself, I believe their turntable was built by Yamaha....that search may open a few doors to finding a solution.

Good to see there are a few of us about.

It would be good to know where the 67 was made. My 85S is Yamaha (or Nippon Gakki) though the Yamaha version does not have the lift arm the 85S has.

Thanks for your responses. The 67s was Swedish made unlike the 85 which was made by Yamaha. They are two different animals. This is what the lifter looks like but where to replace the oil?

(talk amongst yourselves while I figure how to upload the photo...)

Success!

My markers are not as good as yours.

Undo the yellow screw and remove the arm.

Undo the green screw and the lifter unit should come out the bottom. You might have to undo the locking screw that allows the black horizontal plate up and down.

Where the blue line goes to there should be a retaining nut or screw. If you undo that then lift arm and shaft should come out. You might have to lift the plunger a little (were the yellow screw came from) as you move the handle and shaft back and forth a bit to remove it.

If I am right the plunger should then come out the bottom. Watch out as there might be a light spring in there. Some just work on gravity but you never know.

Will have to see how it looks before we move on.
