Timos Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Hi all, I just thought I'd share with you my experience to date and pose another question for the braintrust here. My AT LP5 is going strong. It's paired with some KEF LSX on dedicated stands with an M&K V10 Sub. I'm currently using the built in phono stage in the TT and am having a few issues unless I tiptoe around the TT when it's playing. I've chatted and emailed a few places and think now that I've got my head around it, some recent vinyl and 100+ classical vinyl from the classifieds here, that I'd like something a bit more extravagant and budget matched to the speakers and sub (lets say $2000, for table, cartridge and phono stage. I'd love to have some advice from you all. Thanks in advance. Tim.
aussievintage Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Sounds like you've got the bug for sure Before buying new table, I'd be tempted to try to solve the tiptoe problem, so you can look at the widest range of possible turntable types. The classic solution to footfalls causing problems is a turntable shelf, mounted on a wall. If this is not possible, various vibration absorbing "feet" under the turntable, also a massive plinth/or board under the turntable, and all sorts of combos. People put their turntables on specially purchased shock/vibration absorbing devices, but also on squash balls, tennis balls, half inflated wheelbarrow tyres, trays of sand, marble slabs, big wooden butcher blocks. The only thing I can add is that if you have the turntable on a stand, make sure it is substantial and solid. A flimsy table with feet that don't sit flat are bad news for turntables, as with having a table on wheels. Converting the table so it sits on three legs will ensure that it won't wobble on it's feet (but it might still wobble if the floorboards are not solid). I had to screw large sheets of ply to my floorboards so I could walk around the tt (and I have a very tolerant wife). You might even find that addressing these issues improves the quality you are getting from your tt so you hold off the upgrade for a bit longer (allowing your upgrade budget to grow). 1
Wimbo Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 If the floorboards are the problem, then you have a problem. If you can't put a shelf on the wall, try moving the table away from the offending floorboards. If that doesnt work, hammer the floorboards down with some nails. Need to find the supports to do this. Another way is to put some mass on the boards. Say a heavy bookcase or side board to accomplish this. Isolation wont work as the board will lift regardless. 1
Wimbo Posted October 23, 2019 Posted October 23, 2019 Also, for your 2k price point, I'd keep an eye on the classifieds here or if you see something that rocks your boat on Ebay or Gumtree, post it here so it can be scrutinized. Only prob with that though is that someone might be you to it. Good luck.
