nofixedaddress Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Halfway through Reamde by Neil Stephenson. Roller coaster ride so far............ 450 pages to go. Hope the pace doesn't let up. NFA
Orpheus Posted January 4, 2012 Posted January 4, 2012 Why be happy when you could be normal? This is Jeanette Winterson's autobiography, and it is great, possibly her best work ( she writes fiction).
The Fez Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Patti Smith: Just KidsI'm really enjoying this at the moment, it traces Patti's early career and her relationship with Robert Mapplethrope in the late sixties and seventies. I knew nought about Mapplethorpe before starting this book, but he went on to be a well regarded photographer. He is responsible for the front cover of Patti's "Horses" album. I particulary enjoy reading of her chance meetings with Hendrix, Janis Joplin and other greats while she lived in the famous Chelsea Hotel. I'm half way through the book, she has just met Lenny Kaye who forms a large part of her musical journey in years to come. Soundfan -- These are the books I like to read. I just finished Eric Clapton's autobiography. Its fascinating to discover how artists meet other artists and influences and inspirations become sometime "legend". Such as Duane Allman with E.C. Both guys of course in the top 10 of the greatest rock guitarists (Rolling Stone) I'm particularly interested currently in the period of say 1965-1975, with respect to Punk, Rock, Blues artists. If anyone has recommendations for good reads I'd love to hear about them. BTW "Horses" has influenced a lot of artists too..according to Wiki -- Johnny Marr and Michael Stipe are examples.
mondie Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 This book is riveting reading. It tells the story of the failed attempt by Andrew McAuley to cross the Tasman by Kayak in 2007. I find it tough reading in parts, he was a complex and driven man and a lot of the book is written by his wife.
biologist Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Just got this book yesterday, has won several armfuls of awards, yes, its a graphic novel but is just so well drawn (incredibly detailed), well written and a gripping story of love, betrayal and what people do for those they love. Sat down, started reading and put it down several hours later when my stomach started complaining like its neck had been cut. This version is a Hardback, is beautifully bound and Eleven pounds delivered to Perth....
peacewise Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Just finished Fatal Revenant by Stephen Donaldson. It's pretty good. Own the next one in that series but going to wait until the final book is out before continuing. Next leisure read planned is the new Raymond E Feist novel, A Crown Imperiled. A couple of new text books for semester one (of this years teaching degree) popped into the letter box today too.. Assessment and Reporting, Celebrating Student achievement - looks very boring. Motor Learning and Performance - looks interesting. Steve Jobs by Isaacson sits high on the shelf - as in has been put away for a couple of weeks, half way through it and enjoying the read, probably get back into it after summer semester goes kaput.
FeelTheNoise Posted March 2, 2012 Posted March 2, 2012 Khaled Hosseini also wrote The Kite Runner. Both tremendous books.I'm currently reading Dead Air by Iain Banks. (novel) Just finished: 18 Hours (The true story of an SAS war hero) by Sandra Lee. Its an account of an aussie troopers time in Afghanistan fighting al Qaeda, while attached to an American unit. I read The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns and thought both books were amazing. Two of the best books I've ever read. I just finished reading Into Thin Air by John Karkauer and it was as fantastic book. The book was pretty easy to find, I just found it online where a friend convinced me to try it. Within days it was at my door. It was so good I finished it within a week. I'd really recommend this book! Think I'll be reading Into the Wild next by him as well and then watch the movie that was based on it afterwards. So many books to read but so little time!

I saw the movies of Into the Wild quite recently on SBS purely by chance. I suggest you have a copy of Walden close by to follow. And thanks for the tip on Into Thin Air, didn't realise he had written anything else.
davidsss Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 Just finished Georgias by Plato. My daughter is doing VCE Philosophy. Interesting stuff but I do find Socrates analogies a bit trite at times. DS
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted March 3, 2012 Volunteer Posted March 3, 2012 I'm ploughing through the "Game of Thrones" series (not quite Plato) That will keep me occupied for a while 2

Orpheus Posted March 3, 2012 Posted March 3, 2012 I'm reading Button's (just my name for him) Religion for Atheists. Entertaining.
Guest 322 Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Sound interesting Egg, whats the gist? I doubt its uplifting.. It not about the treatment of the workers, more about the treatment of Westerners by Chinese factory owners....
mondie Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 Thanks Egg, that sounds more interesting. I will have to check it out at the local library. I'd like to read this one. I saw the doco on the abc. I saw the doco too but the book really floored me. I need to watch the doco again now that l feel like l have a bit of insight into the man and what drove him. Grab a copy off eBay before it goes OOP. Its really well written and will bring a lump to your throat in parts.

In the mean-time, I'm reading "When God was a rabbit", a lovely, very funny work of fiction by a woman called Sarah Winman.
mondie Posted March 4, 2012 Posted March 4, 2012 I suggested eBay because l had trouble finding a copy. Its a good read when you are relaxing because it really makes stirs you up emotionally, well it did me anyhow.
soundfan Posted March 6, 2012 Posted March 6, 2012 I just finished Cormac McCarthy: All The Pretty Horses a few days ago, and I loved it from start to finish. Now to read the second book in the trilogy, The Crossing. 2

sligoriverblues Posted March 7, 2012 Posted March 7, 2012 I've just finished The War Of The End Of The World by M. V. Llosa. Raw and magnificently written, it is together with The Conversation In The Cathedral my favorite Llosa...
