Cd mechanism in these units was the sacrifice, my tray is unreliable and prior to that player had problems recognising discs. Is it possible to replace/upgrade the cd player part? I use it as DAC with Foobar 2000 + Monkeymote and the pre-amp in HT bypass mode so the 3-in-1 functionality of the 8200CDQ is very useful and not something very common if I was to replace it?

I did have one, excellent 3 in 1 and no problems with CDs and the tray.

I doubt it will be easy to replace the drive. Probably easier to buy a CD transport e.g. Cambridge Audio CXC or rip CDs which is what I did after a few months because it sounded better.

Depends on the cause, only then would you know what the possible fix is. Could be the laser, the mech' or associated electronic circuit (servo)

Without knowing the cause replacing the CD Mechanism might change nothing.
