aussievintage Posted October 11, 2019 Posted October 11, 2019 (edited) Let's see if there's any interest in this. I really like the styling of old record players, and love to get them working again. This old valve unit is up and running nicely. Look at those air vents and shaped speaker grill, all in a lovely two-tone case. That would be a 4-speed Collaro mechanism I think, but I don't know who actually put it together as a unit. HMV maybe? Post some pics of yours if you have 'em. aussievintage Posted October 11, 2019 Author Posted October 11, 2019 Another one a bit more "modern" This one is stereo. An unusual transistor circuit - uses high impedance speakers as the collector loads. Probably barely puts out one watt/channel. Made by Kingsley, using a very common and reliable Monarch player with 4-speeds and auto-stop. 3
aussievintage Posted October 12, 2019 Author Posted October 12, 2019 A great old valve HMV. Classic combo with the 4 speed BSR player with auto-shutoff. Still using the original turnover mono cartridge and I was able to get new styluses. 1

audiofeline Posted February 14, 2020 Posted February 14, 2020 (edited) The first one very much looks like the Collaro tonearm. The two side vents on the top are exactly the same as those which were used on 1940/50's pantries. Sorry, I can't share much excitement over these, they were like (but look slightly better) than the first record player I had. I hated the 2" speaker that pointed up underneath a 12" record, and the ultra-heavy ceramic cart (with flick-over 78 stylus, that I couldn't work out how it was different to the 33 stylus, they both sounded equally as bad). I ruined a lot of what would otherwise be quite valuable records now. If you want to get me excited with old record player pics, show me a lovely hammertone broadcast idler. But don't let my preferences interfere with your enjoyment of these. Edited February 14, 2020 by audiofeline
