Guest kab Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Ginger Baker passed away aged 80. He was a huge influence when i was a young fella learning to play drums. RIP.
ThirdDrawerDown Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Much will be made of the Cream connection, but let it also be said: Hawkwind's best drummer. RIP Ginger. 1
Full Range Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 I just got the newsfeed and read it One of the best drummers ever A characteristic and sometimes volatile character that did not mince his words Keep on drumming in that other place 1

Batty Posted October 6, 2019 Posted October 6, 2019 Saw Hawkwind live with Ginger Baker at the Top Rank in Reading UK as a youngster. R.I.P. you will be missed 1
rantan Posted October 7, 2019 Posted October 7, 2019 Probably one of the most innovative and distinctive percussionists of all time Not the most easy going person, but great performers are not always bland and self effacing and Ginger set high standards for himself and everyone else. A true innovator and a huge loss to rock music. Off you go to the big gig upstairs man, we are all poorer for your passing. Rock on and R.I.P.
Linolad Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 Vale Ginger, Very much larger than life, Cream was a huge early musical influence that continues to this day. Blind Faith followed and the Airforce then I guess I didn't keep up with the rich tapestry of Gingers influences, (and influencing), in popular and not so popular music forms. It does make me feel vulnerable when so many of my early musical heroes are no longer with us. Cheers
Wayne Elliott Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 Amazing Drummer. Besides the aforementioned, his work with Masters Of Reality & BBM was outstanding also. R.I.P. Ginger.
Ian McP Posted October 8, 2019 Posted October 8, 2019 (edited) https://www.rollingstone.com/music/music-features/ginger-baker-essential-songs-cream-blind-faith-fela-kuti-890696/ <Fela Kuti and the Africa 70, “Let’s Start” (1970) “He understands the African beat more than any other Westerner,” legendary Afrobeat drummer Tony Allen told Rolling Stone’s Jay Bulger of Baker in 2009. Baker’s uncanny grasp of Afrobeat’s core pulse — which trades the crisp drive of American funk for a more sinuous, intensely syncopated glide — is on full display on this 1971 live track, recorded in the early Seventies when the drummer set up a studio in Lagos. Baker’s deep well of experience with extended jams served him well here: The strutting groove he lays down on “Let’s Start” sounds like it could go on forever. > Edited October 8, 2019 by Ian McP 1
