Looking for suggestions on speakers for a friend with a Pioneer A109 amp (40w) and Technics  slq210 TT and an SL-p370 cd spinner.  Budget is around $200.  I know people tend to suggest the Usher S520 at this price point but just thought I would see if there are other compelling arguments.

Q Acoustics 2020 is another potential option

Mission 750, older Krix Brix, Wharfedale Diamond, Monitor Audio Bronze 2, Spendor Prelude, Kef 104 and older B&W etc two way designs may be worth looking at, some with more box volume and bass than Usher 520 but vintage style and sound.

If you want an accurate detailed sound the Ushers are unbeatable. If you want a bigger sound the Richter Wizard Mk1's are very good if you can get them.

Some amazing speakers I've purchased over the past few years in that price range

JPW AP1
Richter oracle
Canton karat
Wharfedale diamond 9
Pioneer HPM 60
Monitor audio silver ( older ones )
Jensen spx 7 / 9 ( some for sale on ebay currently )
Coral ex-101
Elac fs68 ( ok these were a bit more but amazing speakers)

I would also suggest that the cosmetic / aesthetic side will eventually be as bigger influencer as sonic properties.

For that $200 and under it has to be 2nd hand.

loved the Whatmough FX1. small LS3/5 size speaker.

2nd hand whatmough C series speakers go pretty cheap.

I think you need to not rush in and buy anything. keep an eye out on ebay, facebook marketplace and classifieds.

This may be way off the mark but I noticed the place I bought my sub's from does passive small speakers, everyone raved about the Voll B44 (Micca MB42x) but now they have a updated slightly larger version. Voll B50 and they are dirt cheap new ($130 atm) with a no questions asked money back guarantee.

I have no idea how they sound and have nothing to do with the company, never seen or heard these but new at less than $200 and can get money back if not happy, couldn't hurt to try maybe if they are of interest.
