Songs with spoken lyrics

Recommended Posts

Thought I’d start a thread of songs where the lyrics are spoken or mostly spoken ( a few liberties may be taken here and there)

The idea came to me after I relistened  to an old 1990 song “Imperfect List (part 1)” by Big Hard Excellent Fish.  A Uk recording (Robin Guthrie and Peter Wyllie) which is basically a Brain dump/hate list of things and people from the late 80s.

so here is the starting list

  1. Imperfect List part 1 - Big Hard Excellent Fish - Imperfect List
  2. What’s He Building - Tom Waits - Mule Variations
  3. Putnam County (live - Tom Waits - Nighthawks at the Diner
  4. Last Great American Whale - Lou Reed - New York
  5. O Superman - Laurie Anderson - Big Science
  6. Sharks - Morphine  - Yes
  7. The Revolution will not be televised - Gil Scott-Heron - The Revolution will not be televised
  8. Television the drug of a nation - Disposable  Heroes of Hiphoprisy - Hypocrisy is the greatest luxury
  9. Sie - Einsturzende Neubauten - Tabula Rasa
  10. Brown Rice - Don Cherry - Don Cherry

Desiderata - Les Crane

Miami - Baxter Dury

almost any Sleaford Mods song

Wow yes Desiderata.   Equal parts horror and awe listening to that on the radio when growing up.

the other 2 will check out as unfamiliar names

Baxter Dury is son of Ian. He's the kid on the cover of New Boots and Panties, standing against the shop window with his dad. He sounds like his dad too

I liked the lyrics so much that I bought a book of poems from Daaood.

Bit maudlin possibly by todays standards but I thought you could add the one that sorta sorted it all

Wink Martindale--Deck of cards

Fatboy Slim - Sunset (Bird of Prey)

somewhere between spoken word and singing and Mr Cook did and awesome job - nearly the career high

nearly the entire album An American Prayer is Jim's poetry recited / spoken word with some (incidental) music by The Doors

Oh wow Staiway to Heaven

that reminds me of the other spoken version of Stairway to Heaven, by he who shall not be named (no not Voldemort) Rolf Harris.
