Chewbacker Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Because Logicprobe was to scared to Ill get the ball rolling It would appear universally in Australia that Jimmy Barnes sticks out but in the big wide world I find the following overrated U2 Elvis
GSpot Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Elvis? Now I know you guys are taking the pee. Nickleback. They should be writing jingles for chocolate drink commercials. 1
Jake Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 U2 Pearl Jam Guns N Roses Nirvana Aerosmith Metallica Sex Pistols There are plenty more.
Chewbacker Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 No really I think Elvis is overrated, just like U2 he came along just when the music scene needed a new 'act' (and he couldnt do that either) Okay yes he was 'original' 1
Keith_W Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 That's easy. Andrea Bocelli. He can hold a tune, yes. Far more talented than nearly any pop star, yes. But he has a small voice and a tendency for shallow and showy interpretations. 2
cheekyboy Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Because Logicprobe was to scared to Ill get the ball rollingIt would appear universally in Australia that Jimmy Barnes sticks out but in the big wide world I find the following overrated U2 Elvis U2 & Elvis overrated?.......you're the same bloke that nominated AC/DC and INXS in the Aussie thread aren't you? I guess there's no accounting for individual taste, but I'm pretty sure where your taste is located!! Cheers, Keith 1
Chewbacker Posted February 10, 2011 Author Posted February 10, 2011 Cheekyboy Hey u dont have to think a band or performer is overrated to like them. I do like a little bit from almost everyone - I just think some get talked up alot more than they should.

Hey to you too Chewbacker...........I don't think I said you had to think a band was overrated in order to like them, did I. Maybe the question should be........"most overrated band/individual, that regardless you still like a little bit". Cheers, Keith
GSpot Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I think we need to add some perspective to this. For every overratted act you list, include an underrated act. This might give some insight to the tastes (or lack of:p) of some. ie If you list U2 and Elvis as overrated and then list flunky dunky and the muppets and oregano the cellist as underrated (or anything from JJJ), then I know to add a bucket of salt to the comments.
robin-hobart Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 (edited) Abba, god I hate Abba. Gabba hates Abba? I like that. I am led to understand that the catchiness of their tunes belies some very complex underlying music. Yes/No? Edited February 10, 2011 by robin-hobart
comfortablynumb Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Hey Chewbacker..... I'll back you up on the Elvis one. Your reasons are spot on too. Plus the "manufactured" born again Christian, goody two shoes thing after his stint in the army.
wolster Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Hey Chewbacker.....I'll back you up on the Elvis one. Your reasons are spot on too. Plus the "manufactured" born again Christian, goody two shoes thing after his stint in the army. look out guys. Turntable might read this and he will not be pleased. FWIW, I think that Elvis, particularly his early work, was sensational. I'll heartily agree with the nomination of Jimmy Barnes and add Johnny Farnham. I'll think of more later. Cheers wolster
nofixedaddress Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Definately U2 plus Foo Fighters, Red Hot Chilli Peppers James Brown, Shouting from well away from the SNA crowd so as to make a quick getaway Diana Krall ! NnnnnnFffffffffAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa 1
soundfan Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 I stayed out of the aussie overrated artist thread and will do the same here. What I generally think happens on these type of threads is that everyone tends to call an artist/band overrated simply because they don't like them, and that shouldn't be the case. If you happen to think someone is overrated, state why you think the way you do, and not just simply because you dislike their music. Chris 2

Chris I agree Chris, that is exactly what is happening, but I think this thread and the other Aussie one were all a bit tongue in cheek anyway and to be honest I don't think anyone is taking this seriously.........if they are, they really are whackers mate! Cheers, Keith
DarrenW Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 U2............. Music for Insomniacs Johnny Farnham.......... Music when you're constipated Cliff Richard.............. Music when you really need to vomit
LogicprObe Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Mr scaredy cat LP here............ This sort of goes with a theory I have that most bands or artists really only have a couple of really good albums and then slide downhill. It seems that most bands are overrated because they only acheive the acme for a short time and then just survive on their past deeds.

It seems that most bands are overrated because they only acheive the acme for a short time and then just survive on their past deeds. My theory as well. If you removed the well known artists name off one of their latter albums - the album wouldn't see the light of day. I think they just lose that emotional connection to their music. They start believing their own marketing machine hype and think that any crappy piece of music they produce is shear genius. Very sad to listen to....... NFA

It seems that most bands are overrated because they only acheive the acme for a short time and then just survive on their past deeds. A point well made. OTOH if an artist changes his style (cos he's out of ideas) he is often derided for this and their carrer is sunk !!!! Even if the "new direction" is as good if not better than the original. A case in point.......
LogicprObe Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 See, I reckon that was a turn for the worse...........I didn't even like The Commodores doing it. Different strokes.
nofixedaddress Posted February 10, 2011 Posted February 10, 2011 Did the change of direction cause the demise or was the change in style created by a fracturing of the band itself which in turn lead to the demise?
