Actually, thinking back, it was a Hi-fi show back in the early nineties at the Hyatt Perth that got me back on the audio upgrade train. As far as I know there has hasn't been one over here since then. I truly think that events such as this are a great way to persuade people that what they have is no-where near good enough and they should be spending more on this hobby. It certainly helped to lighten my pockets. I really will have to be very crafty and see if I can get the timing right for a visit to my daughter, - over there.

Seen the TT being set up today. Very impressive!

In addition to the TT & cables comes a $35K phono/preamp from Clearaudio which I didn't even know exists.

Does anyone know whether there is any ticket pre-sale? Or do we just turn up and buy tickets on the day?

One ticket valid for 3 days or one day only?

Cost for above???

We've been advised $20- at the door and $15- online, so presumably online is in advance. I suspect tickets won't be sold just yet since the show is in October. No idea how long they are valid for at this stage.

Well Enigma, your comments dont surprise me at all. The market here is comparatively tiny, such that the local industry is often defensive, negative and paranoid...much like a dog defending it's turf which is sad. There is a lot more co-operation and friendliness in the States, Asia & Europe where high end audio has a healthy market. I've seen first hand just how nasty and cold local retailers can be. Dog eat dog? **** yeah. I'll boycott the pommy show. I'd rather buy a ticket & fly to Hong Kong for the big High End show there....everyone is there & it's a much shorter trip than CES or RMAF.

i can't work you out. it's organised by a specialist english based company that runs hi fi shows all over europe. all the exhibitors are australian and it's their hard earned going in so visitors can have a bit of a taste of what's available.

as for a healthy market overseas, you don't do much research otherwise you would know that for example, UK sales figures for audio equipment were down to 185 million pounds , having peaked in 2001 at 419 million pounds and below the averages of 244 million pounds in 1992-94. cd players were off by 29.9 % in volume, 34.8% in value ,amplifiers by 13.1%/10.6%. as for the USA, yep they're all saying lets buy that new pair of speakers and not feed the kids this month or pay the mortgage on this piece of worthless dodo.

yep ,i'd go to hong kong too. the rooms are so small, anymore than 3 people and it's uncomfortable. that's enjoying the moment.

save your $20, you won't miss a thing.

...Well my comment might have been off the cuff, but was not meant to bate you. Quoting figures is not going to promote good will to your Audio Show. Everyone knows the world market is down substantially, but "Guru" why don't you ask companies like TW Acustic how they're travelling? Last time I checked there was a 5 month wait with back orders. Certain segments of the market are shrinking, but others are thriving. High end shows o/s are still doing well as are the smarter operators. Whether this show in Melbourne compares to the claustrophobic show you described in Hong Kong remains to be seen.

...and you expect to promote good will to your Audio Show with a reply like that? You only reinforced my original opinion! Everyone knows the world market is down substantially, but "Guru" why don't you ask companies like TW Acustic how they're travelling? Last time I checked there was a 5 month wait with back orders. Certain segments of the market are shrinking, but others are thriving. Your figures are a smoke screen when in reality high end audio shows are still doing well as are the smarter operators. not my audio show, i don't make the rules. and goodwill, your opinion,.....don't worry, boris will look after you.

as for claustrophobic it's simple maths 20 sq mtrs on average versus 36 sq mtrs, done 2 shows in hong kong so i must be talking out my arse.

as for the figures, presented to the BADA annual general meeting early this year by market research organisation GfK. reported by paul messenger in the may stereophile 2011 edition.

bugger.

I think you need a cup of tea Guru! Let individual opinions be already. And yes, Boris does look after his good customers.

afternoon leon,

very good question and i certainly hope sna members answer it.

generally in the past, here were 4 types of show attendance, the quick in and out brochure collectors, usually on the saturday, young and mostly interested in home theatre.

then came the older and more focused visitor who wanted to enter quietly and sit and listen ,not at the front but off to the side and back , but stayed for at least 20 minutes and then came up and thanked you for the music and maybe asked a question. often came with wife in tow who graciously deferred to her husband's passion but also know's what good sound is. these were the ones who would call 2 weeks later and want to buy.

the third type were the ones who sat right in front and won't shut up. it's a running commentary to their mates, generally they move in 3's and the idea is to find fault by comparison to there own "high end system" or something they have heard in the showroom of there favourite dealer. they will stay for long enough for everyone in the room to hear their opinion and then make a large show of their leaving by stating there next room to visit. quite often they carry a disc of music designed to destroy systems and render the incontinent without control. they are beyond education.

then there are the ones who want to learn more and are a delight to engage, they won't waste your time and will appreciate your answers to their many questions.

still ,i'm looking forward to it. we are going to melbourne later this month to check the room out and make some bookings.

regards,g.

Never heard her before so I youtubed her, much more interesting than the others.

Actually I'd prefer Emma Kirkby, Eva Cassidy or Ella Fitgerald.:)

Guru, I had a rant about this show on a trivial point & reckon my comments weren't fair, and as you pointed out were ill informed. So I apologize for that.

My comments were based on my experience of a small hand full of retailers, dissapointing as it was, not all are cast from the same mould.

There were many on this forum that not only were keen for a hi fi show, but are of a better breed of dog if i'm to borrow your analysis. I look forward to meeting them in October and enjoying their warm hospitality.

I believe it will be a good show and should attract many visitors. It has been a while since the last one and people here are more optomistic in life.

Considering all the disaters recently, it is good to have something for people to look forward to.

Cheers, E.
