proftournesol Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 Mmmmmmmmm!Friday, saturday and sunday! Think I will put it in my Diary and make the effort, we should organise a big SNA GTG at the time! V great idea, a super mega SNA GTG:)
Bunyip Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I am sooooooo there. And combining it with a mobile SNA GTG is AOK!
King Marty Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I always wondered why all the GTG's are happening in Melbourne and now they have their own Expo???? Bloody Victorians I might have to join visiting firefly's parents KM
unclemack Posted February 1, 2011 Posted February 1, 2011 I just hope it isn't dominated by AV to cater to the "mass" appeal of HT. It's been many years since I went to a HiFi show in Melb and I have a few fond memories of DBX demos, Klipschorns and the amazing new Linn Sondek TT... Good times. M
Guest guru Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Evening all, Looks like this will be a trade day on Friday and public on Saturday/Sunday. The Chester Group are already approaching UK manufacturers to tie in commitments as most have already had dealings through there own national shows so there should be a strong European flavour evident. Regards, G.
The Grif Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Sounds fun, i have never attended a proper HiFi Show before. Love the idea of a GTG to tie in with it. Also, we could get a list of all the demonstration rooms before the event and set out some marking criteria and rate each system at the show. And if Marc agrees, we could tally up everyone's scores and have a few awards on SNA such as "SNA Reader's Overall Best System Award 2011". I would also be interested to see how my thoughts on certain systems compared to SNA contributors who's opinions i hold in high regard. Cheers.
New Sensations Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Looks like potential exhibitors are gonna need deep pockets: $5500 per room? *Meep*.
Once was an audiophile Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Looks like potential exhibitors are gonna need deep pockets: $5500 per room? *Meep*. i hope it includes bed and breakfast
Guest Drizzt Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Gees that is pretty steep isn't it. I guess the advertising exposure they get may offset that cost somewhat. What does an advert in a magazine cost these days ? (just as a comparison)
Guest JohnA Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 very steep indeed. Hopefully there is a good turn out to give them good exposure and lots of after sales, otherwise i can see this as been the last of these events
New Sensations Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 I know there are lot of threads on SNA comparing the AU market to the US market. With this in mind, the rates for a standard room at RMAF 2010 was around US$2500. http://audiofest.net/2010/room_rates.php?Sid=6278c4e03d50d4807b1606be886c311a (I know it's not the same market, and not the same organisers but it still makes for an interesting comparison.)
Guest guru Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Exhibitions at hi fi shows back in the 90's used to cost $3000, this is not expensive at all. We have done trade shows for the last 5 years in Bologna at Cosmoprof [which is the largest cosmetics trade show worldwide] and a 3mtr x 5mtr open section was $15000 [ie $1000 a sq mtr] along with 400 other exhibitors in 1 of 16 fully packed exhibition halls. Imagine Sydney convention centre except 6 times as big.
Paul Spencer Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 Cheap vs expensive ... I guess it depends on what you anticipate to get out of it.

Voltaire Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 The cost is minimal compared to exhibitor costs a something like DesignEx, I was running a company in 2008 and did the Sydney DesignEx, 3m x 6m floor space for three days "$20,000.00", cost to design and construct display stand $30,000.00. V
RockandorRoll Posted February 7, 2011 Posted February 7, 2011 ROAD TRIP!!!!!!! i dont know anyone in Melbourne but i think i need to go visit them, who ever they may be

I did some research on this as I have a vested interest and the differences are quite interesting. RMAF is held in the Denver Marriot Tech Hotel which is a 3 star business travelers hotel. Room rates start from $93 per night. Rooms average 23 sq mtrs. Melbourne Marriot 5 star luxury boutique hotel rooms 36 sq mtrs [56% bigger] starting at $269 per night. If you take the cost of RMAF at $2500 and divide it by floor area you get $108 /mtr, divide Melbourne at $5500 and it's $152. If you factor in the differential of 3 star over 5 star as a value then they work out at $151.20 versus $152. Other factors considered are central city location, soundproof rooms, contemporary facilities and no union transport and handling fees, currently with RMAF running at $75 plus $1.53 per kilo. My information is that the organisers are quite good to deal with and professional. Regards,g.
ENIGMA Posted February 8, 2011 Posted February 8, 2011 Looks like potential exhibitors are gonna need deep pockets: $5500 per room? *Meep*. Hi JD, where did you find the price? Who wants to know how much Jeff's Shed costs to hire for one day! One of the things i had to work through was the cost of taking down and re setting up the furniture in the rooms. $5k per room is not an exorbidant price to pay for 4 days when you look at the cost of running a show like this. You have to remember that you are isolating a hotel for 4-5 days, the Hotel wants its slice of the carcas and the organisers theirs - advertising, insurance, security. What everyone here hasn't brought up is how much money they will make from the public visiting. JA, they will have a threshold number of visitors they are aiming for and the door sales add to the costs/profit. If they have set this up well they shouldn't be relying on door sales. I wonder if the rooms will really be sound proof? My experience with hi fi shows in the past is that they were not acoustically ideal in hotels, whether it be noise from the room next door or the room itself being too small for the gear's potential.

valvelover Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 Looks like potential exhibitors are gonna need deep pockets: $5500 per room? *Meep*. you'll probably only get the high end huge markup vendors appearing then. it'll probably be HT mostly, with a small splattering of high end gear, and nothing for the entry level market. 5k per room? you're kidding right? I'd hate to see the costs of ticket prices, probably 300 per day...no thanks, will pass.

As someone who will be exhibiting will you please not bother to to make assumptions about me or my business models, you talk such rubbish and bang a very empty drum.
ChonkyCat Posted February 12, 2011 Posted February 12, 2011 I remember going to that Melbourne show also... I think it was organised by Absolute High End at the time but could be wrong. Still remember some really exotic stuff like the Forsell air transport, Ongaku amp and also two pairs of Audiostatic electrostatics.....I can't believe it's been over 15 years since something like this has been organised!
