Does anyone know of any good power conditioners , now that the Belkin range is no longer available. Are the Monster power conditioners any good ? Any alternative brands?

Are you looking for conditioning or protection? If you are looking for protection (and a little filtering) then one of the SurgeX products might be worth serious consideration. I don't know if they are available in NZ yet, but you could bring one in from Aus.

I have always struggled with the idea of surge protection using MOVs - which is what most people use, as the alternatives are more expensive. While an MOV is a good device - using it for mains surge protection seems barmy to me.

I should clarify that - LHH's recommendation is for a series surge device which, to me, is the only way to go. Your Belkin and most others use MOVs - which are just a fire waiting to happen. The series devices put an inductor in series with the power and this provides power conditioning as well as surge protection. I haven't heard the SurgeX, but at least they do it with the appropriate technology. Spending significant money on an MOV based device is silly as they should really be thrown away and replaced every couple of years.

I live in Whangaparoa and the power is suspect at the best of times I guess my main concern is the full protection of my system without effecting the sound Quality. If it is possible to have the power massaged at the same time to produce a better sound, then that would have to be a bonus.

For some of us here, adding power conditioning etc to some components made things sound worse. For others there was no sonic difference. Each persons power supply and gear is different so you won't know till you try.

But as to my personal experience, my amps and dac/pre sounded bad via my Belkin, but my CDP had no sonic difference I could tell. So I employed my Belkin were it didn't affect things and used my contents insurance policy* to protect me where it did.

It really depends on the brand you are using for protection and conditioning.

If the units are doing their job properly then picture quality on panels and projectors improve markedly, not to mention their extended service life as a result of not having to use power that has regular transient peaks and dips. For projector users this also translates to longer useable bulb life.

For reasons addressed in earlier posts, I would not recommend second-hand power equipment.

There are a number of products on the market these days, and depending on your budget, will in part determine how many will end up on your short list. For instance I dropped $2,500AUD on my filter plus another $1,500AUD for the UPS which supposedly enhances the performance. On top of this custom power leads, and you can see the dollars can escalate quite quickly.

Was the investment worth it, well for me I don't believe so. When I built I put a few things in place to ensure I had as good a supply for my audio from what is being delivered, and in all honesty the voltage at my place is IMO, quite stable.

what few things did you implement ?
