Ernie1553552694 Posted November 12, 2010 Posted November 12, 2010 Good afternoon. We are preparing for a listen to Too_tall's preamp. Unfortunately he left the glass in the Waikato. We are here in Auckland. If anyone has a pair of the above valves for an afternoon loan we would be grateful. PM or post on this thread directly before 1.30. Cheers. Tony aka Ernie
gortnipper Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 EC82 or ECC82? If it is the latter, I have a lot of them. I have never heard of an EC82.
Ernie1553552694 Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 Hi Gort, ended up not using T_T's pre, but thanks for the offer. The listening session went well...
Electra Posted November 13, 2010 Posted November 13, 2010 Yes, Some silly fool forgot the nice shiny glowy bits. I blame a lack of sleep. I have, however, managed to confuse MC's thoughts even further by introducing different amplification to his system briefly. He should hate me.
Ernie1553552694 Posted November 13, 2010 Author Posted November 13, 2010 He should. You managed to pull a loose thread that has unravelled somewhat. For the few brief moments those monoblocs were on, they exerted some remarkable control over the Chario bass drivers. This is where certain cable changes provided vivid insight into what was happening in the system. It's possible to use cables as a form of tone control to work around this issue, but long term, I don't think it's a satisfactory solution. Using cables as tone control is probably a subject worthy of it's own thread...

B*stard!! Your Plinius 9200 is going to take some beating to make the change worthwhile - and thats going to be a lot of dollars for not a lot of gain I suspect. Maybe a bit Plin SA series? Maybe a Perreaux 350P? Maybe even a Pass Labs amp? The options are out there. But don't get too carried away at unbalancing a good system. Having an amplifier which is 1/2 the total system value is probably getting a bit keen!

Yes I kinda figure that - but you pried that door ajar! I'll say it again: 'b*stard'! Maybe a bit Plin SA series? Maybe a Perreaux 350P? Maybe even a Pass Labs amp? The options are out there. Yeah that's in my mind, and the space constraints... It's a bugger the Plinius isn't 250W instead of 200W per channel - that might be all the difference? It only hits 280W nominal into 4 ohms, so a bit more juice to start with might make it closer to 350W into 4 ohm's and that be just the tweak it needs to get that last 2%-4% or so of performance (from the Charios)...? P.S. Although the manual for the newer revision (the version with the balanced CD inputs) claims 300W or more into 4 ohms?

I think it might be worth talking to Plinius.
Electra Posted November 14, 2010 Posted November 14, 2010 50 watts is not the difference, instant ability to deliver any amount of current is. Those monos of mine are 250+ into 8ohm, 500 into 4. But its not the wattage, its the current. That being said, your plin must deliver high current when asked to surely?
