TD19 Posted November 5, 2010 Posted November 5, 2010 Hoping someone can answer this probably simple question ... my wife wants to send a copy of the 'Boy' DVD to her sister in the USA. I have looked on the usual US sites to see if the DVD is available there but it appears not. The local version is Region 4/PAL (?). How can I obtain/'make' a US-compatible (Region 1/NTSC) version?
nixon76 Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Find out what DVD player the sister has and see if there is a region hack maybe? Could be as easy as 1-2-3 on the remote control (so to speak)
mmfz Posted November 6, 2010 Posted November 6, 2010 Another option may be to encode the DVD as an avi file or, if it's HD and mkv file. This can be done on the PC with mostly freeware software then burnt on to a DVD. She would have to play it on the PC if her TV/DVD player wasn't capable of handling these files.
Griffy Posted November 7, 2010 Posted November 7, 2010 de-zoning is easy, but I think many US players can't handle PAL I remember seeing Bluray players that could only play NTSC DVDs

Could be wrong now, but US being a large market tends to get US specific players and these tend to be less fllexible i.e. NTSC only. We get International versions that are flexible re video standard, region and possibly power supply. The other option is to post DVD player with DVD, HN Visione one is only $25~28 and will run on 110v

Hooster Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 Don't you love DVD regional encoding. My computer only allowed me to change the DVD region 3 times and then went into lockdown. The only way to defeat it was to download sofware. This software can also be used to rip and burn DVDs! Regional encoding has to be the most stupid thing the studios ever did. It has save me a lot of money and I have a nice collection of DVDs. I rarely payed money for one in a shop though...
bazzer Posted November 10, 2010 Posted November 10, 2010 In this case, it may not be the regional encoding that causes the issue (there are ways around that). It will likely be a PAL/NTSC thing.
