I will decide! Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Is "tinned copper" better than 'bare copper' for speaker wire I know that tinned copper can carry more amperage in electricity terms - so does it help with carrying hi-fi signals....?:eek:
Owen Y Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 I don't think that tinned copper carries more current than bare copper. Tinned copper is coated with tin & as tin is greatly different in conductivity (much less) than copper, I tend to avoid tinned copper in low signal audio wiring...esp as we are led to believe that signal tends to concentrate in the outer layers of a wire conductor (skin effect). However, bare copper is a nuisance as it oxidises quickly...so best used in situations where a tight joint is not moved/changed v often.
soundnut1553552715 Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 Supra seem to like using tin in their cables. This is from an interview on TNT website: 'So, what is the use of the OFC? Silver plating is a no good solution to this as it even increases the surface run, by means of its lower resistance. And the silver oxide, although conductive, makes diodicity thresholds and non-linearity. So, again, we choosed the opposite way. We tin-plated the strands, instead, as tin has a higher resistance, hence, making the current mainly be kept inside the copper which stays OFC, with less jumps and less oxide.'
Owen Y Posted November 1, 2010 Posted November 1, 2010 I hear that Supra is v good cabling.... can any Supra users out there give an opinion?
