Shane Hanify Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Gidday folks, spotted a pair of these up for sale the other day for $85. Haven't had a chance to look at them closely, but at the price would they make a good complimentary pair to my closed back AKG k171s? This second set would be my primary for home listening. Pitfalls and pratfalls of buying 2nd hand phones? Or would I be better off putting the money toward a new pair of somethings. It's always been my intention to get an open backed pair as well - they just do things differently. And Ernie, if you say a pair of RS80i or 225i, I'm going to bark at you. I've had a pair of RS80's here for a bit - although they're pretty good, I can't justify the $300 pricetag. Would much rather spend the difference on a dedicated HP amp. Cheers, Shane.
Ernie1553552694 Posted October 31, 2010 Posted October 31, 2010 Ha ha. For $85 those phones will give you a different flavour for sure. You can usually tell if the cans have been driven too hard by talking to the incumbent owner. If you have to shout then there's a problem.

Shane Hanify Posted November 1, 2010 Author Posted November 1, 2010 Gidday folks, checked these out today, seemed fine. Minor scuffing, but in overall good condition complete with the 1/8" adapter. Managed to talk them down to $75. Bargain. Listened to them for a bit at work and annoyed anyone close by. I think I'll stick with the closed cans at work. More resolving than the AKG's but the little phones seemed a bit more controlled off the back of the amped mp3 player. Minutes after I got them home I pulled them to bits (hey why not?) and did the "foam mod" (removed the bit of foam across the back of the enclosures). Even managed not to destroy anything. That really opened them up. Slightly dry mids wellied up a bit and they now have a real kick in the midbass. Apparently the 'mod' makes them sound so close to the 595 it's not funny. They sound fine through the headphone jack in the AVR but I'm clearly going to have to get / build a dedicated HP amp now I have more than one pair. Right now, simply listening to a pile of mp3's off the PC. Will keep you all posted as I listen to real sources. Cheers, Shane.
