I've been playing around with the new height options of late on my Onkyo AV receiver. I've mounted a couple of satellites up high to the left and right of the projector screen and primarily had it set on Dolby Z with THX post processing. I've found with this mode the height speakers haven't really had much of a presence (medium default setting) so last night I switched to audyssey dsx and the improvements were immediately apparent. The front sound stage opened up and made what I was watching a lot bigger.

I've hear that the dsx wide option is the way to go but due to the layout of my lounge is not possible/practical. I'd love to have another pair of fronts to the sides of the main speakers as well as having the heights just for the fun factor, but I'm sure the wife would put her foot down on having a full blown 11.1 HT setup.

Anyone else had a play around with heights? Be great to hear your experiences.

Cheers

This is the new-fangled Dolby Pro-Logic IIz ?

What's the point of this when existing good systems can already produce the illusion of height without additional speakers.

Does IIz heighten (bad pun :P ) the experience ?

Yes that's the one. The 2 flavours are Dolby Pro Logic IIz and Audyssey dsx. Definitely not essential but thought what the hell seeing as my receiver provides for it and the results to me seem pretty good. Only need a couple of satellites as I'm hearing mainly mid to high frequencies and it just seems to give a bigger sense of expansion to me. The effects are slight, but enough to add to the sound experience.
