aarond1553552714 Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I've been given very kind loan of a high-end USB Dac to trial for a few days. Unfortunately, my crappy Dell laptop is entirely unsuitable as the battery is completely stuffed and the power supply injects loud wailing banshees of noise, which renders the system utterly unlistenable. Also, during the 1-2 mins I get on battery power there are all sorts of smaller noises / clicks hashes coming through, possibly related to the USB 1.1 to 2.0 converter I am sharing with the external HDD. Or could just be the battery dying time after time. I've got a desktop in another room which I'll try moving into the stereo room and setting up. But this has no wireless capability therefore I'd have to manually control Foobar / Itunes and I'd prefer not to have the monitor as well in the room. Ideally I'd like to see how the USB Dac works with a Mac with the view to eventually getting a dedicated music server Mac + Amarra / Pure Vinyl. No point in buying a new / TM machine just to trial the DAC. I'd be willing to payfor a few days loan of a Mac computer, or perhaps a box of beer / bottle of good wine! Or, if you are thinking of selling a reasonably late model Mac and happy to loan for a short period...
crispynz1 Posted October 14, 2010 Posted October 14, 2010 Aaron, what model Dell is it? I have a spare battery for a Inspiron 9400. It will last at least an hour when charged.

Thanks for the offer, but it is a real old one - C500 or something, only 20GB HDD etc. Even with a new battery the USB interface seems very problematic through the 1.1 to 2.0 conversion card. And Ernie - haven't got any of that cheap aussie rubbish red, sorry old chap.
