I'm in the market for a new Cd player to replace my original Rega planet.

On the shortlist thius far are the Rega Saturn and the Nain CD5.

I've read in Stereophile about trouble with the philips VAm 1201 transport mech so would like to avoid anything with one of those. I'm also not really interested in any chinese rubbish, but I'm travelling through Singapore later next year, so I'm keen to hear anyones thoughts on particular models to look out for. CD duties in the meantime will be handled by a trusty Philips CD502....

Cheers, Ian

Hmmm

chinese rubbish

clearly you do need advice - many of the best players available are made in China do the research. Most modern CD players are CD rom drives in fancy boxes - go computer/hard drive storage.

I just bought a Chinese rubbish DAC.

Its better than a very unrubbishy American made Bel Canto DAC 2.5, or at least, it now is, since I have took the Russian rubbish valve out of it and put in a 50 year old English one.

Its still not a Cyrus DAC XP, which is English engineering at its very best, similar to the Talbot Princess.

Seriously, If you look around, some of the best of the true reference quality CD players, Amplifiers, DAC's, preamps, and maybe even speakers, are made, and designed, in China.

Of course, the worlds greatest brand, Marc Vincent, is actually made there too. Go buy a Marc Vincent CD player on Trademe maybe?

Um, he didn't actually say "Chinese gear is all rubbish". He said he's "not really interested in any chinese rubbish".

So either recommend some Chinese goodies.........or some non-Chinese um, rubbish.

That was not my intention RF. Damocles is a forum member and lives in China. Many of us are closely following his adventures in Chinese audio space. But if we can all find a lesson in the famous anecdote, then there's hope yet. [Wiki Damocles for something chewy to think about].

Bah I typed a reply and then lost it :)

If I were buying a Chinese CD player one of the Consonance droplets would be on my shortlist (although it is a lot less forward than the Naim CD players).

The Shengya S10CS (Vincent S6II or something like that) is nice but some of the parts are apparently counterfeit - even the guy that found out about the fake parts liked the sound.

Outside of China, I would put one of the Sim-Audio Moons on my shortlist (it actually is on my shortlist but there is no dealer in Beijing wahhhh).

Thinking outside the box, there is the seperate DAC route or even Neil's Olive. The man preferred it to a very nice CD player.

Thanks guys,

there's a few there that werent on my radar. I wasn't really trying to be inflammatory about chinese manufactured goods (but dont get me started about Guild guitars made in China...), just stating that I would prefer for my CD player for the next 10 years to not read something like number 17 on a takeaway menu....

Cheers, Ian

NB: Not at all interested in going a music server type route, Thanks anyway.

Almost everything is made in China, it is just that some of it doesn't have a Chinese brand on it. I very recently came across a US branded hifi item that has a 3000% mark-up (over ex-factory costs) complete with absolute lies about the manufacture, from a long established hifi name.

The current Naim CD5xs is a cracker.

Unlike previous versions it has a digital out.

It also has the option of an outboard power supply upgrade.

And no worries with the CD loading mechanisim as there isn't one!

Naim also get decent resale value, too.

Hi Damocles, I'm most interested in hearing more information if you could oblige, I've had this player for 6 years of trouble free heavy usage and it wiped the floor with the Rega I had, and for significantly fewer dollars. I think Chinese gear is generally underated. I agree with Antipodes; re slap another name on it, inflate the price and people come running.

You might want to look at the sugden cd player or the cyrus players both fantastic and made in the uk

pm me if you need any more info

Triode Corp CD4SE is fabulous. Also built to last forever! You can tube roll for fun, a bit more hands on if you want to become more engaged with your player. It'll smoke most of it's $$ buddies in truthful character too IMO:)

I think this is where it all came from http://www.lampizator.eu/lampizator/REFERENCES/Vincent/Vincent%20CD-S6%20CD%20player%20upgrade.html

I have no idea if it is correct or not and seems to relate to an older model?

In terms of Antipodes statement - I fully agree. My Dussun V8i bears more than a passing resemblance to a much more expensive Mark Levinson Red Rose amplifier

And Macintosh. A lot of aged Asian gents go nuts over Mac gear. Just nuts.

It's like ageing middle-class white guys and their hogs. Some kind of second childhood...

Yeah, I agree Hopeman, the right kind of badge is still very important. Here too, it seems.

Very true. In my experience, Mcintosh and Luxman both seem to fit into that category. Anything with retro styling and a meter is good (having said that - I like them too).

I think this phenomena is most obvious with cameras. The number of people I see walking around with Canon 5D MkIIs and Nikon D700s (with nice lenses)- shooting them one handed...
