would it not be cheaper / easier to find an existing cage? - some manufacturers offer them as optional extras.

Cheers, Shane.

The company has been out of business for quite a few years. Pulled the amp out of storage. Hasn't been used for 8-10 years!

I was actually thinking of an existing amp with the same footprint / height requirements.

Shame on you Brendan - putting lumps of plastic over something that good looking. Next you'll be advocating grilles on speakers. ;)

Cheers, Shane.

Shane, I was trying to grow as a personin others eyes by pretending to care about family values, and the protection of the young.

In reality I feel that small fingers once burnt are a good lesson for the young about caution when encountering the unknown.

In todays nanny state we can't allow that experience, so the world has to become populated with warning signs and protective barriers.

As the mind wanders farther, and we include the wonders of medical science prolonging the life span of, and the opportunity to procreate for, those who in earlier ages would never have lasted long enough to even.......... (no, mustn't say naughty things like that here)

BLI, the human race is doomed.

A possible alternative for the valves is to find individual covers for them as in military equipment, although those might elevate the operating temperatures.

My kids grew up with exposed tubes, and they were easily trained, but its the visiting kids that you have to watch. Then again the amps were the first thing they went to and getting burnt probably saved a lot of our other stuff.

I like it. [said the good parent].

I'd be more concerned with small kids sticking metal objects into the tube sockets (has that ever been done?) Or throwing something around the lounge and busting a tube or two (!)

Not that I have rowdy kids or anything :D

Cheers, Shane.

That's not a post from a mother! Love the logic though. Ours learnt the day I caught one of the SFs on the way down to the ground.

Getting back to the OP's question; you could contact the Australian tube amp manufactures of Supratek or Weston Acoustics.

Neither of their websites show wire cages for their amps, but I'm sure that they can offer these to clients.

There are websites for NZ based wire basket fabricators whom you could contact.

If you go to the trouble of blocking off wall sockets then I suppose that makes sense. Or if you have european friends - apparently they insert their speaker cables anywhere that will take them - must be the cold winters.

There's a place called Auckland Petrol Tank Services in Ben Lomond Cres out East Tamaki Way. I've used them before for work and they tend to do a good job (have laser cutter if you're after a custom hole arrangement). Otherwise they should be able to bend up a piece of perforated steel for you. Will likely cost a fair bit though as they only work in stainless.

Can't help with manufs of wire cages or perf metal cages - you would need a sm scale fabricator for a one-off. Budget might rule that out.

cloth_e's suggestion:

Pearl Tube Coolers can be fitted to all the tubes, which will prolong tube life as well as protecting the glass from impact. They are made from copper, matt black painted, they will still be warm, not as hot as tube bulb temperature though. However, not so good for 'ST' shaped tubes, eg. 300B.

Individual tube cages:

Little fingers can still get in there, but the tube is protected.

A small sheetmetal manufacturer could make you one out off scrap/offcut perforated metal. Use at least 1mm or 1.5mm thick to minimise vibrations. I made myself one for my valve tuner and powder coated it black. You would need to take it to one to make it fit. Shouldn't cost more than $100. Powdercoating would be extra and worth it(Dampens metal, harder wearing)(small powdercoaters will do for cash if you can wait till they do the colour you want. There is one in Patrick street Onehunga), you could paint it also.

I don't have the equipment to make it now.
