iPeng is probably the nicest interface. Free = scary GUI. The iPod Touch is still an ok device. Apple is still my platform of choice, although until the Android ecosystem starts filling out it's population base, then an iPod (even a big one) is still the default option. Just get a decent case and a screen protector.

IME an iPad is not a single function device anymore, so it's considerably more than just a remote... Even if that's what it starts out being.

Ok, I am a simple man and I find a lot of this confusing.

I am currently in the market for a NAS (or possibly a small Atom based home server), a new DAC and a Squeezebox Touch (and anything else needed to make those things sound better).

The current plan is pretty conventional (something like NAS >SB Touch > Electrocompaniet DAC (my fave so far along with the Red Wine Isabellina > xxx AMP > xxx Speakers.

I am still grappling with horn vs conventional speakers and solid state vs tube amplification.

Music will mainly be 16bit FLACS and some 24 bit loaded from B&W music society (most of this I have on my hard drive and the CDs are back in NZ). Remote will an Ipod Touch using Ipeng.

Is the firewire or USB DAC route going to be much better? (I get nervous when hacks are needed etc).

Remember ... I am simple (and I also don't want wires all over the place!).

I am trying to evisage how this works in the rack. NAS > Touch -connected by USB- > DAC > AMP> Speakers

No, usually:

NAS > Touch > Coax/Opt DAC > Amp > Speakers

or NAS > USB DAC > Amp etc

I don't think the Touch natively works with a USB DAC although I think you can hack the config files to make it work. The USB port is primarily for attaching a local HDD.

So let me get this right. You are talking about connecting a drive to the Touch via USB rather than a NAS on the network right?

If so then in the rack its SPDIF from the Touch to your DAC and analogue from then on, you don't need a USB DAC at all. I'm really not sure what is confusing you.

i think paraDox and Tkr are telling you what you are asking... i.e. you don't need a USB Dac. The SB has digital out to your normal old (non USB) DAC.

So why might one want to use the USB out of the SB in a wire less configuration? I suppose if you havea USB DAC of course... but also when I had an EA off-ramp usb converter, I thought I could keep the (superior) sound quality of the Offramp, but get the the benefit of wireless (noisy computer in a different room, and no cables running across room) by adding the SB.

I'm not sure if in reality that would have maintained the superior sound quality of the off-ramp though... and now it is a redundant question for me personally.

Cheers. I can run the system as I do now (computer > SB3 > DAC > ) and just upgrade the various components but I also wanted to consider potential USB benefits (e.g. offramp) or potentially even firewire.

I think I will just stick with a basic setup

My 10 cents-having a SB touch for a few days has been very enjoyable.I use wireless network to connect to a PC running I Tunes.

Simple to run and use

sound is at least as good as ,I pod touch attached to a Wadia 170

Both systems are totally dependent on quality of recording /Dacs as you would expect

The Ipeng /IPod touch is very good, much better than any remote i have ever used ,especially being able to control volume and song selection when stuck in my office 2 rooms away.Unexpected bonus,

now if i could only get cover-art and be able to surf the net through my TV, :rolleyes:with the same ease

I have had I peng disappear/appear a few times not sure what thats all about

rumble,

how come you use Itunes? i thought SB needed to run off Slimserver/ squeeze center?

Interesting your comparison to Wadia 170!

maybe you need an Apple TV now?

Ha-Ha i just logged on and went to view Nixon grappling with his Apple TV ,before checking here.so yes sounds like a plan ,but i have an older Calida Loewe

i hope this does not rule me out .

I am going to flog some gear to buy a Projector ...but also attracted to Shore HiFi s loewe TV that allows web surfing and just about everything else

I tunes plays by default on the SB touch, superbly it also allow's Hi Rez files to play that I cant get to play on my Apple touch but reside in I Tunes- see below

03-My One And Only Love Various Audiophie Jazz Prologue Part 03 - 192kHz 9216 kbps 348.9 MB 1/08/2010 11:06 a.m.

I should be able to use Foobar(24/96) as well(following Antipodes

suggestion) but the App that allows that to work rules out XP ,so I will need to swap OS with a PC at work somehow and try it out.

Like Nixon, it will take a little bit, before I get used to what is possible with the Touch
