SpongyP Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 A friend/neighbour is after an amp & bookshelf speakers for his son's bedroom  (fortunately they're a few doors away; let's keep it less than 50wpc, to be safe). The source will be ipod. Budget is a few hundred. I know there are copious options on TM but thought I'd post here in case anyone is having a spring clean-out.
Daddy Dom Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Yup, I have this, http://www.audioenz.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=10919 the ipod can go in an aux input, so if you want to consider it, you're welcome to PM me with an offer. Cheers, DD
got tinnitus Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 For speakers, JBL Control 1's are great for teens. My daughter has a pair (hooked up to a 1980's Technics 45w amp, one on TM for $120 right now as it happens). The Control 1's go loud but not type of distorted bass sound you get from those cheap boom-boxes which drone away.
glennb99 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Possibly a bit expensive but nice amp: http://audioenz.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=10567
Ernie1553552694 Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Powered speakers like Audioengines come to mind. The little ones would fit the budget and spec.
ilikecrumpets Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 Don't go OTT! My 16yo daughter has my Kingrex T20/PSU, a Squeezebox and a pair of Klipsch Synergy B2's in her bedroom and listens to Slipknot, Pantera and System Of A Down. Non-stop. I can't get her to open up her musical open-mindedness!! Time will tell I suppose...
Stephen Smith Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Hey Gaz, I have a Kef digital amp/ipod dock that was part of a pikoforte set, I used the speakers (Keff eggs) elsewhere so bought small pair of Denon bookshelves (more efficient anyway), the ones from the CDM 10 micro system. We used it at Mangawhai last summer for indoors and its been sitting around since we sold up. It sounds pretty well balanced and doesn't go too loud. Its pretty cool. Give me a yell if you think it might fit the bill. S...
sedge Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 Don't forget some headphones on a long cord and make sure you mark the breaker for that room at the switchboard. Sedge.

sedge Posted October 8, 2010 Posted October 8, 2010 I had decent headphones as teenager and it hasn't hurt my hearing ? They were the enclosed over the ear ones so they chopped out all the outside noise pretty well. I think in ear phones are the real killer, crank them up to drown out the background and get some bass, they are right on in there... Sizzle.
Ernie1553552694 Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 It's just as much about duration as it is about volume. Long periods of listening at higher than normal levels are actually quite damaging for the hearing. It just depends on the quality of headphone and style of music as to how loud and how long listening sessions can be. As usual YMMV.
guitardude Posted October 9, 2010 Posted October 9, 2010 I've a nice pair of Db's that are on TM at present. $100.00 is the asking, they wont go real loud with a smallish amp, so pretty much perfect I'd suggest....
