Gidday folks,

just recently had a big shake here. 7.4, 33km west of chch hearing reports 10 - 30km deep.

Power outages across ChCh, some damage to roads and buildings, big aftershocks still happening. Central city shut down by police. No Tsunami warning.

Hi fi related : Spat my standmounts off the stands, tossed the CD player off the top shelf. Both suffered minor damage but still going ok.

Hope everyone is ok.

GENERAL SAFETY WARNING just broadcast ; Stay off cellphones and streets unless absolutely needed.

Cheers, Shane.

Plasma smashed and my floorstanders ruined. Rear speaker fell into and damaged couch. My housemate's floorstanders also ruined. In all, not a good experience.

Good excuse to buy some more gear - listening to CHCH radio here in Sydney, thanks to squeezebox. Sounds like its a miracle not more people hurt

Jeez that must have been very nerve racking, I remember feeling quakes all the time when I lived in Japan but never a 7.2 magnitude one.

Glad you guys are alright, gear is replaceable as opposed to lives. Take care!

No one had died from the earthquake, to put it into perspective. "Stuff" can easily be replaced.

In my home all my Cds are scattered over the floor of the Music Room. One of my Epos ES14 speakers was upended, but the voice coils don't seem to be rubbing, so they'll be okay. Some review equipment almost "walked" off the top of the equipment rack.

Power just back on for me.

All OK at Chez Lewis. Only hifi related damage was to my daughters JBL Control 1 which fell on the floor and munted the grill.

Thank god I don't use spikes on my speakers; fixed to heavy metal plates instead. Otherwise I reckon they would have tipped over.

Seriously heavy shake though; 8 footy players couldn't have shaken my bed any harder than that quake did.

New townhouses next door to us, the entire footing and buildings moved 3inches to the south. Amazing energy...

I live in Merivale so a lot of 70 to 100 year old houses; most have lost their chimneys.

I had to laugh; not long after the shake, National Radio played Beach Boys Good Vibrations. About half way through they faded it out with a comment about the tune not being appropriate :-)

That must have been a frightening experience in your penthouse suite high atop the AudioEnz Tower.

Great to hear that you survived relatively unscathed.

These types of events bring it home to us how precarious our lives are and how easily everything can be taken away.

Some disturbing pictures of damage to property online and great dissappointment to hear of looting going on in the CBD.

Let's hope everyones lives and livelihoods can get put back on track quickly.
