No contest Hmm maybe some truth indeed even if a Swallow does not make a Summer. Recalling my experience with the Wharfedales--in the early 70's Chris Ball made me two massive double thickness MDF--the REAL stuff not the Weetbix of today-- Airedale Clones Yes - a solid if not particularly detailed sound Used Dual /AR TTs and old EAR with "hundred" Tubes/ Sansui 777/ or Quad Valve. I will concur a fine speaker, my only other sojourn into Wharfs was a pair I bought from the Chemist in Newmarket about the same time-can't remember his name but he was a Hifi buff. I feel Wharf went down the slippery takeover slope-did they ever recover--I fear not. But my favour would go to the times owning Tannoy Reds/ Golds mating with Decca Ribbons /etc and generally feeling more involvement with the playback they produced, poss' owing to the finer ancillary gear matched with them. Tannoy also suffered the same grisly fate at the hands of Beatrice Foods(?) but with Worker buy back and the Funds from the the Ferry disaster claim -they almost avoided oblivion of the Status for which they were respected. Both brands in my opinion have become "house' items and lost the Aura they once enjoyed. Never the less both admirable at the time- but I swing with the Tannoys Good Listening, DesW
Owen Y Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Well Des, unsurprisingly, your experience (with Tannoys) is more extensive than mine & loads of Tannoy fans would concur, but I've always been taken by the reproduction of classical esp, by the Airedales. But then, I do have a soft spot for 'omni' style speaks when it comes to classical programme.. & jazz even.
