T110 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Does anyone know where I can source a usb/firewire cable? The new piece of disposable technology no longer has firewire yet our old piece of disposable technology does (new mac. old ipod) and I dont want to waste anymore $ on the blasted stuff. Also, my CDP has died again. It coincided with (A) introducing an Airport Express to my amp, and(B) a power outage the following morning. I'm hoping it's just a wee problem caused by the outage(possible spike) and not an issue of incompatibility with the Airport Express. Has anyone had any issues with the introduction of an Airport Express? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks Craig.
T110 Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 Yes I am a ludite! The new Mac does have a firewire port but it's a different Firewire port to the old one.
nixon76 Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 Yup - you need a FW800 to FW400 converter cable/adapter. This is a popular one but I didn't like the idea of that sticking all out the back and just waiting for someone to accidentally knock it and damage something: http://www.amazon.com/Sonnet-FireWire-400-Adapter-FAD-824/dp/B0000CDJPQ So I got this one, which works just fine: http://www.amazon.com/moshi-FireWire-800-400-adapter/dp/B002JH3TW8/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_b
MarkH Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 You can buy that locally too, here...http://www.acquire.co.nz/acquire/default.asp?PageID=ProductDetail&pf%5Fid=345611&dept%5Fid=1800086 They are in stock despite what that website says, I work at the local Sonnet distributor.
T110 Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 Thanks guy's. That will get the ipod sorted. Has anyone had bad experiences with the Airport Express causing problems with their CDP?
MarkH Posted August 31, 2010 Posted August 31, 2010 What sort of CDP problems? The only issues I've had with the Airport Express is the occasional dropout, which I think is more a wireless issue at home.

Or via mini-toslink to toslink cable to a digital in on your CDP?

Hi T110 - I'm looking at doing what you are doing but check out difference in jitter between the analog/digital signals: http://www.stereophile.com/digitalprocessors/505apple/ So I'm now looking at DACs...

I didn't try to play a CD until the following afternoon when I found the CDP was reading and spinning the disc but no output signal. That same day we had a power outage as well so it may be related to that. I'm just trying to cover all possibilities while I await the news from the repairer. We've had a strange problem in this house with the CDP going on the blink whenever I hook the amp up to the audio out on the TV/DVDP/or the FM tuner when the tuner is connected to the outside FM Aerial. I'm just hoping the same problem hasn't occurred with the Airport Express. Thanks.

Thanks Lucky:) For now the iTunes is purely for convenience sake but I cant completely wipe the idea of adding a DAC either:o
Luckiestmanalive Posted September 2, 2010 Posted September 2, 2010 I'm hearin' ya. I should just get the airport express now and a DAC later. Just not sure if it'll play nice with my existing wireless network...
