Draken Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Ok so lately i've noticed my Sub is kinda . . . . . . .Gay. What are my options for a good unit that doesnt break the bank as i'm poor and saving for a wedding too! Mainly for movies not too fussed about music cheers.
ilikecrumpets Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 You'll probably find your Wharfedale sub has a bloody big porthole, a sure sign of intrinsic gayness. Here are a few suggestions off Tardme for non-gay subwoofers: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Subs/auction-313192390.htm - a smaller but potent unit from the sub specialists. http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Subs/auction-313520012.htm - it may be white, but the sound quality is right! http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Subs/auction-314014574.htm - why not DIY? Add a decent plate amp (Jaycar etc) and a nice suitable driver (try Hasaudio for instance) and it could be a budget beater. Failing that and if you locate gold at the bottom of the garden, explore the delights of acoustic enemas with this bloody great thing http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Subs/auction-313536501.htm Definitely not limp-wristed, but it'll tighten you up as if you were a lumberjack that stumbled into Studio 54.

HAHA good stuff yeah i looked at that little Velodyne i quite like the idea of the CHQ series. so would they be a great deal of an improvement over mine ?

Yeah I think so Draken, it may only be an 8" but the little Velo's have plenty of welly. It does depend on the space you have (the physics of acoustically loading a room), but certainly I'd have the Velo over the Wharfedale in a heartbeat.
Draken Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 not too large maybe.... 3 meters wide by 7 metres long. I'd be looking at the 10" Ilikecrumpets if i was to get it! :-)
Tony Davey Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 thats a reasonabely large room for a sub to fill. I assume that your main speakers are across the 3m wide bit and you sit down in the 7m long area? Similar dimensions to my old HT room in Auck, very similar. I found that the CT-150 I had when in Auck was about right (construction was mostly block wall with some gib aswell). Theres no replacement for displacement, go at least the 10. I personally wouldn't go for the Image sub as above, good for music, but if you mostly want it for HT duties, may lack a little bit of that bottom end wallop that a 10 (or 12 or 15) velo will deliver Sen
ilikecrumpets Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Agreed, but if his seating position is right at the end of the 7m he'll experience a bass 'bloom' depending on how his sub is situated. I'd still go for a 10" or 12" though, and with a decent amount of power especially if he likes it loud.
Draken Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 see for pics of room: http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p429/draken25/Home%20Theatre/New%20Theatre/IMG_0229.jpg http://i346.photobucket.com/albums/p429/draken25/Home%20Theatre/New%20Theatre/IMG_0226.jpg
Draken Posted September 6, 2010 Author Posted September 6, 2010 Speaking of DIY could i not put a better driver in the box i have like this: http://www.hasaudio.co.nz/dayton-audio-tit280c-titanic-subwoofer-p-345.html of would that not make a difference at all ?
Brian Ono Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 A couple of things I would suggest,I have the sub in my TV room behind my seating area and it sounds better than my previous setup which is not dissimilar to yours.I also changed my cable to an AQ .This tightened the bass up quite a bit.I was suprised at the difference this made to the sub.My only other suggestion is to pull the centre speaker out from the cubbyhole a little .This may not improve bass but allowed better performance from my centre speaker. In my ht room I have a theophany sub which is great for ht and shakes the floor when challenged,Senator and Ilikecrumpets are right there is no replacement for displacement.
