Cook1e Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Hi everyone, After lurking here for a while I thought I would say hello. I see there are some very devoted people in both audio & home theatre here with a wide range of tastes and knowledge & don't mind giving a bit of advice here & there. If all goes well here are some pictures of my humble setup. Yup its an old Plinius III power amp (circa '82) in the picture which I hooked up today on the Denon 2808 pre out for the front speakers & I feel gives a bit more 'guts' to the system now. Some older music (Psychedelic Furs, The Ruts, Clash, The Beat, Skids, Au Pairs to name a few) don't feel as 'thin' to my ears. The IIB pre amp is sitting on top of the power amp for decoration at the mo. Main speakers are Mirage Omni 550, centre Mirage Nano CC & surrounds Mirage Nanosats. No sub for movies at the mo, the 550s do quite a good job, but might get some further down the road. I stream my music (flac) via PS3 media server through the PS3 to the Denon. Only hassle is needing to turn tv, amps, PS3 & pc on to play music, but in the overall scheme of things not too big of a deal The screen is a Panasonic 50" V10 and I'm very happy with the setup at the mo. Omegaspeedy Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Cook1e, welcome to the forum. That's a nice system you have. For interest sake, what ratio out of movie watching vs music listening do you use it for. Regards James.
Shane Hanify Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Gidday Cook1e, Welcome to the forums. I'd hardly call that a humble setup - quite a few people do not have a power amp attached to their avr for starters. I run one with mine for the fronts and wouldn't have it any other way. Great photos, your system looks good. Cheers, Shane. [edit] Snap James.
little blue penguin Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Hi Cook1e, welcome. Always nice to see more members joining in, and even more so when they're practically next door:)
T110 Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Welcome Cook1e. I've always been intrigued by Mirage speakers since I heard a pair sounding rather good at Soundline Auckland back in the early nineties.
Cook1e Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Thanks for the welcome everyone Omega - probably 75% music 25% movies mainly due to fact that I've more music than movies. Low Orbit - I only decided to connect up the Plinius recently, it had been sitting around gathering dust so to speak & I thought why not...... Cloth_ears - yup just an hour up the road for this Otagoite, gota go where the work is T110 - I hadn't heard of them before I went into Living Sight & Sound in Timaru & after trialling them at home decided they were the ones for me, mainly due to the budget I was on.
Owen Y Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Plinius IIb + III.... I had that exact set up, way back then. Another welcome.
Cook1e Posted August 29, 2010 Author Posted August 29, 2010 Thanks Owen, I've had the Plinius IIb + III from new so heading towards 30yrs....Had Technics TT & Celestion spkrs in those days but only the Plinius been a keeper.
Luckiestmanalive Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Welcome aboard, Cook1e! I love the proportions you have made with your system and I'm a sucker for petite floorstanders in the nude - your Omnis are very pretty! I started on this forum with a Plinius power amp (3100) fed from my HT receiver's pre-outs. I really appreciated being able to have my cake and eat it too. But I had to split my hifi listening from my telly watching as this forum encouraged me to spread the madness to sources like a TT or tapedeck and there just isn't room for everything on one stand...
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 Hi Cook1e. Those Omni's have always been a favourite of mine. A really warm, big and open sounding speaker. The trade-off is the lack of pinpoint imaging, but I think the pluses really do outweigh this minus.

I was very fond of them, and despite their lack of imaging the sound was very much as you describe - big, open and enveloping. A very easy listen that was engaging. And they did bass very well. Couldnt handle the flea power though! I also had a pair of M291i + 10" sub. Overall, I think Mirage does some quite nice stuff, though it is a fair sight cheaper in NA - as are most things...
Cook1e Posted August 30, 2010 Author Posted August 30, 2010 Thanks all for your welcome, I do like the Omnis & look forward to listening to them for some time to come.......
Cook1e Posted July 5, 2011 Author Posted July 5, 2011 I've added a couple bits of new kit to my system since the original post & I thought I would share with you all. I've added a Mirage S10 sub for HT use & appreciate the extra bass when watching movies. Instead of using the PS3 for music now I use a SB3 and today a Matrix Mini-I Dac turned up so I've fitted that into the mix. 1st impression of the Dac out of the box is better sound staging than SB3 by itself and also found that there is more detail at lower freq than previously.
Dunnersfella1553552754 Posted July 5, 2011 Posted July 5, 2011 Nice! But now you're going to need a bigger cabinet...
Cook1e Posted September 4, 2012 Author Posted September 4, 2012 Well I've had a bit of a spend up over the past month or so & have acquired a couple new bits of kit. The old Plinius pre & power amps have been consigned to the spare room and been replaced with a Plinius M16 pre & 8200P power amp. I had the M16 Phono fitted by Plinius last week and have just got it back. I'm sure if you were carrying the remote down the street you would get nicked for an offensive weapon
