little blue penguin Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 I've never been much a fan of headphones. For many years I had an awesome pair of Pioneer Electrostatics whose sound I couldn't fault, but after an hour my ears started to hurt from the pressure of the pads. Only recently has my interest in headphones resurfaced due to complaints from family members about my music tastes, and by threads on various forums about headphones. My recent DAC purchase (Audinst HUD-mx1) was influenced by its inclusion of a headphone amp, so all that I lacked was a pair of decent headphones. That issue has IMO been addressed by the arrival of a pair of Shure SRH840's. They've only been in-house for 3 days but have been running 24/7 either on my head or just burning in, and boy do they sound good. Build quality and comfort are excellent too. I had them on for 3 hours continuously and felt no irritation from them at all. I have them in my workroom where there is plenty of opportunity to use them. Anyone else here using them? Big thanks to GGGAudio (a member here) for supplying them.
Shane Hanify Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Gidday Brendan, not a bad set of cans you have there. I wouldn't get them for two reasons - coiled non detachable lead and no self adjusting headband. Picky I know, but the amount of times I've rendered (sub $100) headphones useless by destroying one or the other ... Cheers, Shane.
little blue penguin Posted August 28, 2010 Author Posted August 28, 2010 Hi Shane, The cable is detatchable, so you can expect a custom built replacement to appear one day, along with a complete rewire of the phones. Only the entry level SRH240 has a fixed lead. Not sure what you mean by a self adjusting headband, but as mentioned these are very comfortable.
Shane Hanify Posted August 28, 2010 Posted August 28, 2010 Ooh. That's different then. Self adjusting is sprung / tensioned as in the AKG k171 and 271. May have to look into them should I upgrade the 171. I love them to bits but they're a shade uncomfy for long sessions. Cheers, Shane.
EtheB1553552753 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Never had the chance to try Shure headphones, can't say I even knew Shure made headphones, until now that is. My original Koss something or others were big, closed back, heavy and, although possessing excellent sonic quality, left me with hot and uncomfortable ears after a side or two. Next set were Koss HV1/LC's. Open back, great quality, but with a clamp-type headband that left me light-headed when I (eventually) took them off. Lived without any headphones worth talking about for quite a few years (separate listening room away from family) but decided to get some a couple of years back. Auditioned a few likely contenders (and that's not easy - not many dealers prepared to let you take 'em out the box and actually put them on your head nowadays) and ended up with a pair of Sennheiser HD590's - absolutely subliminal! An absolute joy to wear and the quality of sound is so open, clean and complete my speakers tend to be used far, far less these days.

EtheB1553552753 Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 Well if you're ever up here in the tropics (!) let me know and you can call in and take a listen.
