GGG Audio Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 So the Mrs. finally bought scrabble, and since you can't scrabble and watch TV I thought what a great chance to hook up the old TT. So I dragged it out, and my old Marantz EC500, then discovered the Marantz had no Phono i/p, then got and old Technics intergrated with a phono stage and hey presto! (Well, it was slightly more complicated than that....) The main issue I am having is that the HF is distorted, and seems more so the further on the record it gets. I know sweet FA about TT's, so can someone give me some hints as to what may be the problem and where/wot/how the little ball and string adjustery thing is. Ironically, the 1st scrabble night I ended up with the letters A STYLII so yeah...synergy... Thanks to Arikip and the Audioenz forum for pushing me down this slippery slope....hehehe Attached files
a poindexter Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 i had a problem with that a while back , a new stylus may be on the cards for you sir .
Luis1553552738 Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 the antiskate-dangly-weight-thingy looks to be stting on the last ( maximum ) notch. That could be distorting, especially towards the centre of the record. Try dangling off the notch closest to the cartridge.
Owen Y Posted August 27, 2010 Posted August 27, 2010 The first thing to check is Cartridge Alignment... (esp if distortion is worse near the spindle) If you are handy, d/load, print out a Protractor from this site & check. http://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtml Otherwise, get your local quality hifi shop to check out the TT for you. Edit: And yes, set Antiskate (see manual at Vinyl Engine site) & clean stylus of course.

Nak-Mad Posted August 29, 2010 Posted August 29, 2010 As Owen said, do score the manual from Vinyl engine... the antiskate-dangly-weight-thingy is well out.. like set to zero.....(move the thread on the rod mounted on the bearing housing to the furthest back position..should help your problem..assuming 2g for your ortofon cartridge thingy) and besides your alignment, check your tracking force too, and check the needly thing too just in case it is a bit bent or worn. Last thing, check your suspension settings.. just because... nice bit of kit you have there Welcome to the world... once you have had TT you wont go back

SONDEKNZ Posted August 30, 2010 Posted August 30, 2010 I suggest that you nominate one less-loved LP for all of your listening tests, until your are satisfied everything is right with the stylus. Otherwise, in the event that your stylus is chipped, you could be ruining your favourite records. Just a thought.... -SONDEK
