REBNZ Posted August 25, 2010 Posted August 25, 2010 Was out in west Auckland looking for some property and though I saw a tube sticking out under the wood pile. Turned out to be one of two Quad II's sitting in the shed. Offered the owner $50. I think we both think we ripped each other off. Took 'em over to Clarry, a little worse for wear on the outside but mint internally. Clarry figures they have never been opened up. Both in the 20,000's for serial numbers. Will have a report from Clarry in a week or two... might have bust trannys and make nice paper weights... Might be...? I already have far too much gear so will probably sell them once I find out whats working. PM me if anyone is interested. Cheers
REBNZ Posted August 31, 2010 Author Posted August 31, 2010 Right, got these back from Clarry this morning He bypassed the original caps and measured both units which were on spec at 15 watts as clipping point... There is good and bad news. Good news: 1. They are both very low serial numbers 24515 and 24078. This makes them as matched a pair as any and places them in the first two years of production. I think 1953 or 1954. 2. The expensive/impossible output transformers are fine. 3. They don't look like they have ever been previously opened up as all circuit components and wiring loom is as new 4. Unit 24078 has all original tubes. The Bad: 1. Both units are in rough condition with surface rust across both chassis and transformers. Can be cleaned up and brought back to new but not for faint hearted. 2. Unit 24078 looks like its been dropped on its right hand side as the power selector board is cracked and the fuse holder has had its flange broken off and is no longer properly attached to the chassis. 3. Unit 24515 one of the split power pins is broken and someone has tried to fix this with a blob of solder. Advice from Clarry as follows: 1. Need 2 each output tubes (KT66) at $72 each - Note 24078 has a full complement of tubes but you would probably want to match them between units 2. Need 2 * GZ34 tubes at $28 each - one per unit 3. Need 2 * EF86 tubes at $30 to $100 each depending on what you want 4. Need to recap at around $100 for parts and labout Also: 1. Need to find a replacement Bulgin male power plug, these are hard to find 2. Need to make or fix broken voltage selector plate 3. Need to replace or epoxy broken fuse holder 4. Need to decide what to do with chassis. I have posted pics at http://gallery.me.com/ralphbrayham Note that Female Bulgin plugs are avail on ebay and 6 pin Jones plug to RCA adapters are avail at http://www.flashbacksales.co.uk under Quad, A&R, Leak, B&O etc Audio Cables Given the plethora of kit I already have I have decided to find these a new home and have put a new post under for sale.
Peter G1553552693 Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Under $500 to get them going - not bad.
