Hutch1553552752 Posted August 21, 2010 Posted August 21, 2010 Hi all I recently had new belts fitted to my Nak, pitch rollers cleaned etc. Sounding rather good again, but the tape stops on occasion and sounds like the belts are slipping. This results in the usual tape being pulled from the cassette. What extra servicing needs doing? Thanks Hutch

Just made it today Owen, Hutch, From what you describe, almost 99% sure that you have a worn idler tyre, a common problem with early sankyo mechanism Nakamichi's. (The take up spool starts to slip but the capstan keeps pulling the tape through until the auto stop activates.. fortunately quickly on a Nak). FF and RW should also be starting to play up/weaken.... Most Non Nak tech's never look at it, yet usually wears out long before the belts. Easy to remedy, you can do it yourself no problems. Check this link out: http://www.eslabs.com/idler.htm for the how to... which is the methodology I use... just don't loose the retaining washer! If the tyre still has some elasticity but is polished then a good clean can restore function briefly, but if it has hardened, replacement is the only option. Also, FWIW, I exclusivley use ESL tyres in all my Sankyo mech decks when the time comes... haven't had any problems with them at all ( Jeff claims 5 years+ service life for his), whereas the genuine Nak part (if you can get it), can last as little as 2 years. Any queries PM me cheers, Nak-Mad

I'll report back how it goes. Many thanks again Hutch
Nak-Mad Posted August 23, 2010 Posted August 23, 2010 No worries Hutch, You shouldn't have any problems..Jeff's instructions are easy to follow and had plenty of practise myself..takes me about 10 minutes these days Making sure the idler arm is supported is critical.. if it's broken the only way to fix it is to score a parts deck. cheers, NM
Hutch1553552752 Posted September 5, 2010 Author Posted September 5, 2010 Only took a week to have the new Nak tyre posted out from the Us and it only took 1/4 hr to fit this morning. All is well again, great that such a small item & cost brings my replay back to new again. Many thanks to Nak Mad for putting me on the right track. Regards Hutch
