stedor Posted August 14, 2010 Posted August 14, 2010 I recently flew to Melbourne and got to scan the 300 albums they offer on the inflight program. As a result I got The Decemberists album, The Hazzards of Love when we landed. Also recommended to me last week was Tom Pretty's new album Mojo. Got that too without even listening to it. What great albums these are, especially Mojo! What other gems am I missing I wonder? It's all very well back filling the artists I like but are there are so many others not even on my horizon. I'm interested to hear from others who have got something they wouldn't normally have and really liked it?

quentin Posted August 18, 2010 Posted August 18, 2010 Last weekend, I was driving to Palmy and randomly select a jazz piece by Fourplay from my ipod. I had this LP for sometime but it was sometime back that I listen to it. It was beautiful.
St.Noah Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 Picked up this 4-CD set at Groovy last Sat for $39.90. Sort of like James Brown on acid, and you have to be free jazz-ready. Haven't quite got the measure of it yet but I suspect it's gonna be huge at my place. Jim
guitardude Posted September 3, 2010 Posted September 3, 2010 I bought a couple of James Chance things back in the day, never got into it really. Bought an Ornette Coleman album about the same time which is the lp I put on when I want everyone to go home....
TheBlueMushroom1553552749 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 John Butler Trio. Picked up their "mainstream" album with 'peaches and cream' on it, had to get the set. Great music and beautifully produced. NZ music: November Zulu. 1st album produced by a local band as a (quote) 'labour of love'. Superb production, and I like 70% straight off, think it'll grow on me even further. You may have to buy straight off the band tho (I did). Googling works I second the ups for Petty's Mojo-saw him years ago with Dylan at Mt Smart and thought he was the better act by far. A recent discovery was the B side of Boh Runga's album (mostly a collaboration with CheFu)..ex the Winery Tour earlier this year. Truly Stunning!...both musically and in production. Another homegrown artist, Caitlin Smith, has an awesome voice with amazing range. Her 'Fondue Set' and solo albums are great music I keep coming back to. As far as classics go-well, I guess everyone's discovered Nina Simone.......
rob71 Posted September 23, 2010 Posted September 23, 2010 16 Horsepower. An old friend put me onto them a few years back. A US alt-bluegrass outfit (now disbanded). The lead singer belongs to a fringe religious sect, and sings eery twisted tails that mash up old testament fears with folk superstition and some strange but beautiful romance. "Her skin to touch, like a black raven's back..." CD's available online in NZ via fishpond etc. 'Sackcloth 'n Ashes' is brilliant and 'Secret South' is also highly recommended. Oh and I can't resist mentioning Katatonia (checkout 'Unfurl' off their 'July' EP, ). A scandinavian death band that grew up a few albums back and now produce beautiful dark music rich in melody, sung with clean vocals and with intelligent, thoughful lyrics. You won't find 'July' anywhere (unless you download it) but JB Hi-Fi stock their latest album 'Night is the new day' which is remarkably good.
