Citroen Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Hi, I've read a bit about this cheap and cheerful headphone amp, so thought I would try it out. With parts from Jaycar, there wasn't much to lose except for a bit of time and patience... First impressions are of a very clear soundstage, midrange and an OK treble. The bass can be a bit imprecise and although there's enough of it, its not always that clear or extended. Maybe needs more warm up time, or maybe I'm just spoilt by my usual amps. I've copied the Grado RA-1, by going with an all wooden box. Anyhow, anyone else tried these little CMOY beauties in any disguise? Attached files
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 They are a step up from no amp. Start upgrading the bits and it should start improving bit by bit. I've never tried my hand at making a Cmoy but I have one in an Altoids tin. An essential part of a head-fier's journey is to experience one of these. Kind of like crystal radio sets for those who remember them...
Shane Hanify Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 That looks great Cliff. I was about to go down that route then firestone released the fireye 1 and ruined my fun Still on the list to do one day before a fully blown DIY HP amp. Cheers, Shane.

Currently using Burr Brown 0PA2134PA Op amp. Capacitor upgrades? (Yes, i remember crystal radios, made one in primary school, many many years ago).
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 The power supply and the caps are the main bits. Op amps if the Burr Brown was socketed? Should only cost you half again what you invested, not including the chassis, which is not a bad knock-off btw. The really good caps will sound baad for a while, you know, Elnas, BGs, Sanyo's and Pana's etc.
Citroen Posted August 9, 2010 Author Posted August 9, 2010 Tried it with a Gram Slee PSU-1 (24V) but it wouldn't power up. Not sure why as the OA is rated up to 24V?
Shane Hanify Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Gidday Cliff, either too much current or the polarity is around the wrong way? Just a guess. Cheers, Shane.
