nixon76 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 For those with active setups, what are you using for the cross over duties? From a recent thread I know Antipodes is using his LIO-8 (performing several duties!). What about others? There are ADC/DAC options (Behringer,DEQx etc) and analogue solutions (Marchand etc). I think I remember reading that Jason Parmenter for instance uses Marchand for his Fat Boys.
hopeman Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Fat Boy use active cross over? Does active cross over need dual amp to drive LF and HF?
Ayou21553552688 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Peavey do an active crossover that is ballpark price of the Behringer but outperforms it sonically. If you want to try active without costing yourself a small fortune or using a rubbish Behringer
TheBlueMushroom1553552749 Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 Using my Anthem AVM-20 (preamp) digital XO at 80 hz, with a Marchand XM9 crossing between sealed subs and my IB sub at 53 hz. Have used a multiple XM9 analogue arrangement also-FWIW, prefer the digital XO at the high-pass point. Its probably an unfair comparison tho, as all my sources are digital nowadays.
Owen Y Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 hopeman;129955 wrote: Fat Boy use active cross over? Does active cross over need dual amp to drive LF and HF? Yes, active/electronic xovers sit between preamp & power amp/s. Is Jason now employing active to drive the Fat Boys? Originally it had a passive xover, as I recall.
nixon76 Posted August 9, 2010 Author Posted August 9, 2010 I could be wrong about Jason. I just remember reading 'Marchand' and jumped to the conclusion it was active. No reason it couldn't have been passive - with the Marchand acting as an outboard xover.
Electra Posted August 9, 2010 Posted August 9, 2010 My crossovers that I use are home made, to a design of which I dont know. Jeff Clark built them. With more capacitance in the power supply than your average 100wpc amplifier! I played with a driverack pro and also a Behringer, both of which offered me on the fly adjustments, but sonically were not up to par.
AudioKiwi Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 The Fatboys used to use a Marchand XM126 valve x-over but now they are passive x-overs (I think). I actually bought the Marchand from Parmenter but replaced it with a Behringer CX3400. The Marchand was just too warm and woolly (the valve one anyway) and the Behringer sounded better - it also has compensation for hi-freq horn rolloff which works well. It may not be the last word in esoteric hi-fi but it is a good starting point - and concidering the Marchand costs many times more the Behringer isn't too bad at all.
Spearmint Posted August 10, 2010 Posted August 10, 2010 I've used a few Behringer products as xovers over the years with the CX2310 being used to crossover mains to subs. My current speakers have the amps and xovers built in, and I've replaced the Behringer CX2310 with a Marchand XM9 crossing over at 60Hz. In my experience some active xovers I've trailed introduce grain and/or edginess to the midrange.

At one point I used a dBX active crossover and replaced all of the output ICs NE5532s(?), or some such, with audiophile things and it sounded great (aggressive and grainey with the original ICs). It is still in the garage somewhere if anyone wants to give it a try.
