bluedog Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Hi Guys before i smash something into a million bits has anyone else managed to get twonky to play nice with a denon amp?. I used to have it going well but it some how went to pot so i downloaded the new version only to make it worse  it works OK for about half an hour then when i go back to the mac to see why it has stopped twonky is rebuilding its data base again.I use to have it open on start up then i could just shut it down in safari but now it seems that i have to have the page open all the time as well? if anyone has mastered this interface please please let me know as it is really really making me go off computer based audio
Gainz Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Are you streaming music? I've had no hiccups streaming to my PS3 from plain old windows media player, but then I listen to most computer based audio via a usb dac or via the ps3's optical out. I use media monkey as the media interface, and it is fantastic. Twonky is a jack of all trades isn't it? Grabbing music from a variety of devices.... so can't help you there. Otherwise, if you have a semi permanent hard wired laptop or pc, try another media player like media monkey.
adikt Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 What have you got the 'rescan time' set to in twonky? I have mine (on a qnap NAS) set to -1 so that it only scans new content. Any new rips are available instantly. I had a few problems (while experimenting) a while back with the rescan time was set to 0 (manual rescan) because when it hit the button it rescanned the entire library rather than just the new file. Paul
nixon76 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Isn't Twonky well known for being aptly named? Not helpful, but just saying - it's probably not best to base your CA experience on it.

nixon76 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Probably/possibly. Ernie will know more. If you wanted to spend a couple a hundy you could get an Apple Express, hook it up to your Denon with an optical cable and just use iTunes. An option. That'll just do sound though. Pictures + sound you'd need an AppleTV*. They come up on TM now and then - I got mine for less than 3 hundred. But of course that all costs more than the zero dollars Twonky requires. * This can be a nightmare if not setup correctly. Like most Apple things it has its foibles. Now I've learnt them, I don't have any troubles.
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 Linn base their computer audio protocols around (T)wonky media. It seems to be coming right for them now though. I'm not sure if I have anything useful to add for solving your problems. As for video, Apple have got that all locked up. Theirs is a closed ecology. The recommendations that Nixon listed are on the money, and yes, cost money. There's some media streaming devices out now that aggregate from disparate sources. I haven't looked very hard but there's a few out there. How long is a piece of string?

Hi Nixion the denon has already got a built in streaming device that works really well when it it feed the music or pictures from the computer. It works well with my laptop on windows media player and did work ok of the mac vire twonky which is an application witch you need to buy.It seems to be going better tonight as i changed the -1 setting which constantly searches for new material to 60 not sure if that is minutes or not but seam to be working the sound is not bad at all i don't think it is as good as the two channel set up but certainly not bad to listen to in fact it may be a bit easier slightly less dynamic? i guess the dac will be the denon dac's which should be of reasonable quality ? i don't know how the would compare to some of the stand alone dac's but it must save on losses associated with cables?

I find my Samsung TV does a great job at video it can play anything i have on the mac or laptops but you would hope when you buy the upper model in a range with all the toys they would work a bit more seamless than what they do sometimes.I don't think it is the Denon it is just the interface between the two unfortunately it is twonky which i think is Dutch ? so the English translations get a little lost
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 3, 2010 Posted August 3, 2010 The higher you go the more likely you are to get nosebleeds. Interbrand communication is always fraught, unless you get stuff that is DLNA certified. This means that like certified stuff should talk to like certified stuff. Although someone who works on the floor would probably have a more informed view about how the bits in this alliance work. Twonky media is a bit of an open source orphan and I think you may struggle with it in the future. IMHO.

Asset (from dbpoweramp) is the media server of choice for engineers at Linn HQ now. It's windows based, but will run on crossover mac. I know that Gilad (Ivor's son) is still on twonky4 on his qnap. The only time I've had issues with twonky is when I was experimenting with rippers and set the rescan to 0. But....I do know of a lot of people have had problems. Do you have an itouch? There is an app called plugplayer (cheap) that is used by some of the guys on DS's. You would need to check on the app store, but I think it is fully upnp (not Linn specific) compliant. It can call up files from twonky and play them on the itouch.

I was using plugplayer on the itouch last night as the Mrs was on the Mac. On the Mac I us a free app called ChorusDS for controlling the Linn. ChorusDS has the ability to piggy back itunes and use it as the music server. Plugplayer was picking up the ChorusDS server as well as twonky, so I was able to stream from itunes on the plugplayer app (via ChorusDS). The downside is that your computer needs to be on with ChorusDS open, but on the upside itunes doesn't need to be open. Here's the link to ChorusDS. The only thing I'm not sure about is if will work properly without a Linn DS on the network. Got to be worth a shot. This guy has been a godsend for Mac/Linn DS Users. http://web.me.com/sean.harding/ChorusDS You need to go into ChorusDS preferences and set the Chorus server (itunes) and re start the app. Fingers crossed.
