Looking for useful resources to help buy a valve amplifier

Featured Replies

I have been procrastinating about valve amps for a long time now and it is time to give them a go. I admit that the (usually) retro styling and glowing tubes are part of the appeal (when compared to my current amp which is a large silver box). In this respect there was a recent thread on stereonet where members posted pics of their amps and some were stunning.

Here in China, locally made represents extremely good value. I have ready access to Consonance, Cayin, Jungson, Shengya and a few other manufactures.

Amps currently on my shortlist include the Consonance 15th anniversary (KT88), Consonance 5.5 (300B), the new Consonance tube pre-amp (probably matched to a concealed solid state power amp), Cayin A88T and A88T-SE.

What I am looking for is as much information as I can find on valve amps (Basically ‘Valve amps for dummies). Descriptions of the various tube types (why choose a 300B vs KT88 etc) and what all the arcane terms mean (push-pull, triode etc).

I’ve had some great advice from Owen and other members in the past. However I built a new PC and lost a lot of my links. I figure a good valve resource thread might be of use to other members too.
