Papa Hemi Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I'm not really into computer-based audio. I find it a pain to hook-up the MacBook Pro to listen to iTunes stored files. However I have an old G3 tower, I am loathed to dump it, I quite like the blue/white look, I find it aesthetically pleasing. The system software is shot. It is now a blue and white elephant. Can I use this as a start for a dedicated storage system for digital music? I don't want to spend $$$ on this (as usual). I suppose a DAC would be prudent, perhaps inbuilt? Any pointers would be appreciated.
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 You might have to work with an older version of iTunes but depending on what your OS version is, you could probably get a Squeezebox server on it, or some such like and use it as a server. Mind you, you'd probably be better off hooking up external USB drives than trying to extend internal storage. From memory, they're SCSI drives. Expensive and not very big capacity drives. Also, an external USB DAC might be the go if you want the simplest setup. Good luck.
Papa Hemi Posted August 1, 2010 Author Posted August 1, 2010 Thanks The issue is that the system software (OS9.02) has gone belly up, I can't reinstall as ... Anyway I was thinking of using the drives (6Gb + 50 Gb) as storage and putting whatever else I want/can into the tower as a start in computer based audio. The thing is I like the tower, a design classic in my view, so I want to re-invent it as something I will treasure. It has firewire400 out, my MacBook fw800 - different plugs - wtf!
Ernie1553552694 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 That's what I thought. The processor onboard the G3 will struggle on OS 10.3 or 10.4. Panther or Tiger respectively unless you got some system 9 disks to do a clean install.
