The Greek clip; Those guys are extreme!! Brilliant stuff.

They all pretty much did what I do when the subject of money comes up.

Evasiveness to the point of being fully able to be Prime Minister in your day job.

Yeah, I just don't get why the anti-cables brigade gets so worked up. I could be evangelical about the positive experiences I've personally had, but unless someone is genuinely interested in Hi Fi there isn't any point really.

Case in point is a guy at work who wants to convince me that I wouldn't be able to tell my Nordost SPM speaker cables from basic monster ones. Sure, I don't mind demonstrating it to you, if you are interested - but please note that I'd rather just enjoy listening to the music with the Nordosts in place.

That is what the cables do for me.

Sorry for heading off topic a little there, T110.:)

Haha. His opinion is amusing and he reminds me of this guy at work. His thinking is thus. "I read in a paper about the propagation of light and sound so therefore cable A cannot possibly be better than cable B and don't even get me started on USB / digital Coax / optical cables as they shift 1's and 0's and they can't possibly change."

I told him that he needed to use his ears and not his eyes. :D

Cheers, Shane.

[edit]

Directional power cables. I burst out laughing at that bit. I wonder if they'd sound better if you jam them in the other way?

Every audio freak should see this film. It's a reality check on how crazy (and financially poor) you can become if you let your hobby take over your life. I've watched it a number of times and it never fails to fascinate. I particularly like the English guy who says he was a normal human being until the age of 35. After that....

I suspect that some of these guys don't actually listen to a large range of music. They probably have a limited number of vinyl discs of audiophile quality (like the Diana Krall disc used as the background) they play over and over while they tweak the specifications to extract the last drop of sound from the groove floor. ' "Ooh, I heard the fourth horn belch in the middle of the soft bit"

All these guys belong to the Audiophile Association of Athens and our friend, the late Dave Whittaker was also a member. Those who had the pleasure of seeing/hearing Dave's set-up will understand why.

Strangly the SQ seems a bit richer than the usual you tube stuff. Is this Psychological or is it really better or do I need a hearing test or all of the above?

Yeah, I noticed that, too, and wondered if it was psychological or real... I debated it if for moment with myself and decided to go with real. And then I wondered how it was done. For a second. And then I let it go. :P

(I know that Ross was not suggesting so but...) Dave however was never a wealthy man, he left/lost his office job at a relatively early age but was clever & curious enough to apply his hand to all manner of audio repair/manufacturing... of lspkrs, & of course his TT... to sustain some sort of a living & an esoteric hobby!

Of course his generosity of spirit resulted in a reciprocal response from just about everyone he met.

Yep, Dave sure has the Bit between his teeth. I did chuckle at the Nude Virgins In Utopialand though!

Those Greek fellas have got some very understanding wives as well. Would I go down the same path as them if I were in their shoes? Maybe. I know I cant honestly say I wouldnt!

How about you?

They have good taste (in this at least). :D

The Greeks seem fond of their HiFi. There was a post in the Industry section about Parmenter picking up some Greek distro rights.

My favourite holiday was in Greece - ensconced in a little hotel away from the package tourists on Santorini. Loverly.

Well, I'm a PIGS myself ( being mostly Spanish, with a bit of Italian thrown in ), and I'll listen to just about anything.

No argument, Owen. Dave somehow supported his large family of kids (was it seven or nine?) with his audio skills as you say. I only met him once for an hour or two. He was quite modest about his considerable achievements, particularly the successful repair of Quad ESLs, and his turntable with three motors and three tracking arms. He was quite sorry when we had to leave to meet another commitment. Unlike the AAA fanatics, Dave came across a genuine down to earth Kiwi guy. Does anyone on the forum have one of Dave's TTs?

To quote the Athens clip

"He had speakers the size of refridgerators and amplifiers that would drain the grid of most small countries..."

Based on recent AudioEnz surveys we seem to be no different.
