damocles Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Can anyone suggest a good iPod dock? I was thinking Fatman but cant find a supplier in China. Not too expensive would be ideal (sub $600) as it isn't for critical listening. Source will probably be an Ipod Have listened to some cheaper JBL docks but would like something better
Luckiestmanalive Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I've been looking into docks for an ipod, too. Best cheap(ish) and cheerful I would contemplate is the Cambridge ID50. If you have your own DAC then I would look at the Wadia 170i or the Onkyo ND-S1.
nixon76 Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 Might be of some help - might not be in budget though, and 'the reg' is pretty idiosyncratic: http://www.reghardware.com/2010/07/19/ten_essential_premium_ipod_speakers/
bluedog Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 By all accounts these sound great i have not heard one but can vouch for the vaf sound http://www.m8sr8s.com.au/ebay/advertisements.html

Actually Fatman is badge engineered by Dared in China, but a quick look at their website didn't reveal the little iTube/dock. Maybe they don't make it for themselves anymore. Cheers, Gaz PS How's the mighty V8i / Moon Harbour combo going?
JTweedy Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Take care with Ipod Touches and Iphones - since these came out they don't have the firewire connection that all docks I've seen so far rely upon to charge and (if they have one) remote usability. I have tried Pro-ject without success. If anyone has any suggestions about docks that they have found work (and charge etc) with ipod touch I would love to hear them!
Ernie1553552694 Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 The new Wadia i171 does. As does the new Fatman Dock.

Cheers, Gaz PS How's the mighty V8i / Moon Harbour combo going? Hey Gaz I am looking for something compact and convenient. Ideally something that can easily be moved between rooms. I'm not looking to run it into my main system so it would need built in or small speakers. I dont really have a budget and would be happy to pay more for reasonable outut. Also, I don't have an Ipod yet - so if there is a better option as a source - please let me know. The pros for the Ipod are that it 'docks' i.e. doesnt use a cable and I think (I could be wrong) I can use the Touch to control my squeezebox. I want an mp3 (or flac) player for travel and for when I am simply to lazy to get up and turn my stereo on. -- The Dusson and Jungson are going well. However I have changed ISPs and dont have wireless for my Squeezebox at the moment (well - I do but my main connection is now wired). Building a NAS at the moment. I find the Dusson takes a bit of juice to shine which isn't ideal when living in an apartment. It actually stopped working recently (something to do with a power surge). Everything was repaired promptly but I felt so sorry for the guy that had to carry it out of my apartment. Looking to buy a valve amp at the moment. Cayin A-88TSE and Consonance 15th anniversary are the front runners. I am also haunted by the lovely midrange of a little Cayin EL34 I heard a while back. Thinking of buying a friend one as a birthday present (she was with me when i had a listen to it and her jaw dropped, as did mine). and then I need new main speakers...
Shane Hanify Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Gidday Damocles, how about this HK one then? Rather polarising looks as the article states but I've heard it running and found it pretty good as far as portable solutions go. Cheers, Shane.
Luckiestmanalive Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Ah, a Ipod dock+speakers. That's a different story, then. I've always fancied the B&W Zeppelin... I haven't heard it, but the reviews have been good. Might be close or just over your budget, though.
nixon76 Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 http://www.sony-asia.com/product/rdp-x80ip Meant to sound okay: The results are really rather impressive, with plenty of volume on tap and an impressive feeling of warmth and balance It's portable (has internal rechargable battery) which looks like might suite you. Should be within budget too.
