hey_homes Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I currently use the NAD but really like the look of this Perreaux amp: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=303443146 Would it be an unwise trade?
bazza hallward Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I have no idea, but I'd like to know too :-) Is the NAD 3400 an integrated amp? It looks like the Perreaux is a power amp. I did a quick look on the net and found a power amp circa 1977. The Perreaux on paper looks like a very capable amp, but it is old. Having said that, the NAD looks pretty capable too. So that begs the question: what exactly are you looking for in a trade? More power, more finesse, etc?
hey_homes Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 The NAD is integrated but I use it as a power amp (DJ mixer as pre). 100wpc and it comfortably does what I need it to do. However, the Perreaux has a look that I find quite fetching and I like the idea of retro NZ gear. I'm new to this hifi game and am quite keen to buying another amp just to hear a difference. But I don't want to get it if it's a dog. In a way I'm trying to absolve myself of responsibility and have you guys enable my wanton purchasing.
got tinnitus Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Even though it's had a recent re-cap, the Perreaux amp is probably 30 years old now. So definitely retro!! I'd be asking how quiet is it; ie, any buzzes or hums either on the output or from the transformer/s. If you didn't like it then you'll easily sell it on again.
hey_homes Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Cool, cheers. I think I'll sit here tonight when the auction closes and see how itchy my bidding finger gets.
Electra Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 While I love Perreaux gear, that is indeed a very old amp. A recap at "some point" does not mean its not going to soon be due again. Try it, but dont spend too much, and dont sell your NAD for a while...
Declannz Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 I replaced some of the caps on the amp boards in that amp before I sold it to the current owner. It's a nice machine. I liked it when I was using it. There is a little transformer hum, but nothing major. It sounds quite nice in a hifi setting, a very capable amp for the age. Just be aware that the casing it quite rough, the front looks okay though.
hey_homes Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Nice one mate, thanks for that. By the way, newb question here: what is a "cap" and why do they require replacement?
Shane Hanify Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Heh. That would make a great partner for my SA80b which looks like it's from the same stable. No, I'm not going to buy it, I have far too many amps as it is. Cheers, Shane.

Gidday h_h. A 'cap' is short for capacitor. It's an electronic component that sort of acts like a battery - stores and releases a charge. After a while in service they dry up internally and need replacing, but under normal conditions this is usually decades. Cheers, Shane.
Electra Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Knowing when it was recapped makes it somewhat more valuable. IMHO of course.
bluedog Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 This is the same as one i use to own and use for DJ work i cannot remember if i used this for the sub or the mains. I had a plinius as well the old rig sounded great, but i really cannot remember what it or the plinius sounded like on there own i am sure i hooked them both up to my Gail 401 at the time and really liked it but not sure if a teenagers ears were listening for the same things ???
hey_homes Posted July 20, 2010 Author Posted July 20, 2010 Oh well I pulled out once the bid price + shipping got to $300. Quite pleased I maintained discipline really.
