I have no idea, but I'd like to know too :-)

Is the NAD 3400 an integrated amp? It looks like the Perreaux is a power amp. I did a quick look on the net and found a power amp circa 1977.

The Perreaux on paper looks like a very capable amp, but it is old.

Having said that, the NAD looks pretty capable too.

So that begs the question: what exactly are you looking for in a trade?

More power, more finesse, etc?

The NAD is integrated but I use it as a power amp (DJ mixer as pre). 100wpc and it comfortably does what I need it to do.

However, the Perreaux has a look that I find quite fetching and I like the idea of retro NZ gear. I'm new to this hifi game and am quite keen to buying another amp just to hear a difference. But I don't want to get it if it's a dog. In a way I'm trying to absolve myself of responsibility and have you guys enable my wanton purchasing.

Even though it's had a recent re-cap, the Perreaux amp is probably 30 years old now. So definitely retro!!

I'd be asking how quiet is it; ie, any buzzes or hums either on the output or from the transformer/s.

If you didn't like it then you'll easily sell it on again.

While I love Perreaux gear, that is indeed a very old amp.

A recap at "some point" does not mean its not going to soon be due again.

Try it, but dont spend too much, and dont sell your NAD for a while...

I replaced some of the caps on the amp boards in that amp before I sold it to the current owner. It's a nice machine. I liked it when I was using it. There is a little transformer hum, but nothing major.

It sounds quite nice in a hifi setting, a very capable amp for the age. Just be aware that the casing it quite rough, the front looks okay though.

Nice one mate, thanks for that.

By the way, newb question here: what is a "cap" and why do they require replacement?

Gidday h_h.

A 'cap' is short for capacitor. It's an electronic component that sort of acts like a battery - stores and releases a charge. After a while in service they dry up internally and need replacing, but under normal conditions this is usually decades.

Cheers, Shane.
