Gainz Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 I finally had two days off to play aorund with my setup. I found out that my PS3 works well with windows media player11 and streams my digital music (or video) from my laptop wav files (some 150gig). I have been listening this arvo and have had no dropouts, just a few seconds delay when changing tracks before a song has finished. SQ is great, but its been mainly in the background. I've decided to use the PS3 as a music hub. It can save music to its library in uncompressed wav either from the server (laborious if more than a cd at a time in nz, and why would you bother) or from a FAT32 formatted ext hdd, I know they work up to 300 gig which is plenty for my digital files. Next step - a new 2.5 320g drive for the PS3 and a dac. I was heading down a simple htpc track.... and I already had one.

I do something similar and also put in a 500 gig drive which has music, all photos and AVCHD video from the carmera. By copying the music down every now and then I only need to have the one box going. It's also great for streaming monster truck videos off youtube when the nephews stay. Have a think about your 5.1 sound if you going to place a DAC inline. You may need a bypass / pass through for that.
coleus Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 Hi there , the PS3 can be quite a awesome bit of kit , it can playback FLAC and MKV and you can browse harddrives/folders rather than libraries, if you dont mind a little bit bit of set up on your home network using PS3MEDIASERVER. Go to ....http://ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com/ download correct one for your setup either Windows/Mac/Linux , I recomend the "Unstable" version if on Win 7 , its actually really stable , http://code.google.com/p/ps3mediaserver/downloads/list. Install on the machine with content stored , it will search and find PS3 just as WMP11 did and show up on the XMB as a green triangle , now browse your computer using XMB/remote or handcon and play whatever you want 24/96 Flacs ripped DVDA's 2 channel or surround , backed up Blue rays MP3's, very versatile. To make the most of it you would need an HDMI capable reciever for movies or surround sound.

Never will have 5.1.... in this house. nevertheless... accessing all movies and music from one sub g bluray/htpc is a good thing for me!
Electra Posted July 17, 2010 Posted July 17, 2010 As much as I can see that a PS3 can be a great bit of kit - I just never gelled with it, and sold mine to a mate. I simply use my HTPC, which also serves as my Squeezecenter server ( I hate having to turn the TV on for music listening ) amongst other things. Also acts as a box I can access remotely to get stuff while out and about. Total setup cost, including 9TB of storage ( this always is changing however ) was around $2.2K. If I had not been silly on the storage side, and not wanted a bluray writer, it would have been sub $1K ( BR playback, but not writer, not sure why I got the BR writer as I have never used it to write anything ) It bitstreams HD audio happily from its hdmi port too, something some HTPC video devices wont do. Does the PS3 do that?

Does the PS3 do that? The slim will bitstream, the older models only output LPCM which is fine.
coleus Posted July 18, 2010 Posted July 18, 2010 yup , LPCM here , I used to have a HTPC but broke it up and sold off the bits , the misses never could get the hang of it , whereas the PS3 is a no brainer for her and the kids for Ben10
Gainz Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 So the slim does bitstreaming. Don't like the way it looks though.
