SpongyP Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 My sister in Auckland is being driven crazy by their DVD player/recorder. TV & recorder are about 2 years old (HDMI), both Panasonic with the link thing. Recording programmes is complex. Curious to hear if others have a happy life with such a combo or is a terrestrial PVR the answer? They don't want to go Sky.

Guest Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 What exactly is the problem with the Panny DVD recorder ? They should be as easy to use as a VCR...

I can't vouch for the Terrestrial ones as in deepest darkest Oamaru we only get Satellite FreeView, but when I upgraded (went from a single channel STB feed into a DVR, to a Topfield Twin Tuner 320GB PVR) it was an experience far more magical than when we originally got our DVR. PQ playback should improve to, as I assume they are limited to Component Video with the DVRs.

The problem is that the STB has to be on the right channel at the time that recording starts. You can program some STBs to automatically do this, but that means you're needing to co-ordinate the programming of 4 different devices in the case of the OPs sister.

You might have to clarify the difficultly otherwise other options may not help as these are no different to using a VCR. The only simplification you might try is turning off the link and getting them to manually switch the TV to an AV in. I know this takes away a feature but it may help clarify what device they are actually dealing with i.e. switch to AV to use the recorder.
got tinnitus Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I recently jumped into a PVR after years without a recorder. I also have Sky but I didn't want the high ongoing costs that come with My Sky. I wanted an all in one Hi-def PVR, Freeview and Blueray. The Panasonic BW 850 works pretty good. It's a bit slow loading a BD and the Freeview TV guide only offers 1 day in advance (if that) but overall it's easy to use. And Sky (via s-video) upscales nicely on the HDMI output. Harvey Normans are selling them out at $900.

Hopefully means a new model here soon possibly with full EPG.

Thanks for ideas - appreciate. I don't have further elaboration of the problem... but I suspect that as they read about PVR feature sets they'll pinpoint the gap between current setup and what a PVR would offer.
