Hifi Si Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Hi, prompted by the listening evening this week, I thought that it could be an idea to do same I am only home on a Wednesday as my other life is occupied at the moment with ballroom dance nationals, so I am going to pencil in Wed 28 July from 6:30pm Please let me know if you are interested. I live up at Kapiti, so it may be a bit of a drive for some of you. Only condition is that you bring along some music to share. I may of course play some tracks that I enjoy, but I really enjoy the opportunity to meet some forum members and also listen to some new music! Feel free to bring vinyl if you wish (Jon!) but please note that I have simply thrown all the analog stuff on the rack and have not optimised any of it. Actually, I have not even spun any vinyl for over a year, so there you go! When I finally finish the new phono stage that may of course all change :-) I may have to run a couple of these if there is such interest as the house is not really large enough to host a lot of audioholics at once! cheers Simon

Jon1553552729 Posted July 9, 2010 Posted July 9, 2010 Horses for courses... Simon is obviously enjoying what he has in the CD/etc stakes! On the other hand I don't play CD/etc only vinyl and of course I too am happy with my choice! Regretfully I am booked on the 28th so won't be able to make it, but I wish you all a happy evening!
Hifi Si Posted July 9, 2010 Author Posted July 9, 2010 The problem is that I have very little vinyl... When I do play something it is certainly enjoyable but at the moment I have a lot more material on CD...
Ross F Posted July 13, 2010 Posted July 13, 2010 I'm quite keen to attend Si's listening session, but I need a lift (not allowed to drive any more). I'm in Johnsonville. PM me if you can help.
Hifi Si Posted July 14, 2010 Author Posted July 14, 2010 Hi All A problem is that my lounge is quite small, so I will just invite luckiestmanalive and peteG along for the 28th (will PM address details). Depending upon what they report back, you can decide whether or not you want to come along the week after that! I have made up some 'super regs' for the DAC. I have done something silly tho and only one of them is putting out the correct voltage. Not to be detered with that, I installed the good one last night! The op amps (upgraded to LME49720HA but may go back to the previous upgrade, the 827) are fed from a +ve and -ve 15v rail, to give 30v across the opamps. They get too hot to handle, but with one reg replaced, there was a definite change noticed. a bit more musical and more insight into low level detail.
Hifi Si Posted July 29, 2010 Author Posted July 29, 2010 Of course, only luckiestmanalive actually turned up! Personally, I enjoyed the new music to listen to and passed around Tuatara London Porter to add to the ambience!
Pete Posted July 30, 2010 Posted July 30, 2010 Hi Simon, have sent you a PM to apologise. Sorry guys, have been quite ill and bedridden for a few days, so wasnt going anywhere! Gutted I missed out, sounds like Si has a great system. P
Luckiestmanalive Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Yes, he does! Thanks, Simon, for the chance to listen to some of my favourite CDs in the best seat on the listening couch! I've been meaning to send this post for the last few days but have started it and been diverted on each occassion and then somehow lost the start I'd made. Si, you have an extensive but very well put together group of components and I couldn't find anything missing in the sweet music they create. The combination is very well-balanced and ticks all the boxes that count. I haven't listened to anything on my system for a few days (we have friends staying from Oz) and this will hopefully help to lessen the disappointment when I finally do!
Hifi Si Posted November 29, 2010 Author Posted November 29, 2010 I am looking at having another listening session before xmas. I have made a few minor tweaks so looking to hear what others think. I also have the 'famous' gigawork DAC ready to go (just awaiting a chassis part). For the money, this is pretty damn good (approx $300 incl a reasonably nice alloy chassis). I have some better opamps to throw in as well as bypass a stage or two. Anyway, I did enjoy the last one as it gave me a chance to put faces to avatars and to listen to some new music (I liked some of the new music so much last time that I went out and purchased a copy) Tuesday - Thursday are out for me, so perhaps a Saturday or Sunday evening could be a goer...
Hooster Posted November 30, 2010 Posted November 30, 2010 I would really be thrilled to attend if I am not working on the date. I would love to bring my passive pre amp and we could see how it is different to what you are using. If you like I could dig up some LPs too.
